Integrated Nutrient Management for Increasing the Productivity of the Coastal Saline Soils of Bangladesh:rainwater Harvesting 2003

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

A field experiment was conducted to maximize Rainwater harvesting as a source of sweet water for irrigation. Experiments were conducted in each of the 3 locations during the T Aman season, 2002 in rainfed condition. Strong levees of 15 cm height were constructed and maintained around each experimental plot. The grain yields were 5560, 5091, and 6653 kg/ha in Ratanpur, Gobindopur and Munshiganj area respectively. The highest grain yield was obtained in Munshiganj area because it is a mono crop area. Rice is grown in T Aman season only in rainfed condition. The whole field is kept fallow during the rest period of the year due to lack of fresh water for irrigation. The yield was compared with that of farmers’ management. Farmers did not maintained strong levees. Therefore most of the rainwater is lost through surface runoff. But in the experimental plots more rain water was conserved with a 15 cm levee and the yield was increased by 11% over the farmers yield. The farmers’ levee height was irregular ranging from 3 cm to 10 cm. The average rainfall was 836 mm during the growing season.
