Integrated Nutrient Management for Increasing the Productivity of the Coastal Saline Soils of Bangladesh: Investigations for Sweet Groundwater in Saline Zone-2003

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

A field experiment was conducted to find out suitable groundwater for irrigation at reasonable depth.The groundwater salinity in Gobindopur area remains within permissible limit for using as irrigation during the whole year with slight to moderate restriction and that in Ratanpur area is within permissible limit (<3.0 dS/m) for a certain period of time from July to December. But the water salinity in Munshiganj area is above the limit during the whole year and not suitable for irrigation use. As a result no irrigation tubewell is seen in that area. Therefore an investigation was made to find out the suitable water bearing formation. Accordingly two observation wells were installed in two aquifers to test the water salinity of each aquifer. The boring log is seen from this bore-log that there is a very thick clay layer of about 112 ft (34.1 m) from 58 (17.7 m) to 170 ft (51.8 m).The water samples are being collected in each month from these two observation wells and tested in BRRI lab for assessment of salinity. It was observed that the water collected from the deeper aquifer is less saline and is suitable for irrigation. The salinity is only 2.2 dS/m. But the test should continue for at least one year to observe the fluctuation range of salinity level. The aquifer potentiality will be tested during the next dry season.
