Surface Water Quality of the Hydrological Environment of Dhanmondi Lake

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Surface water quality has become a very crucial water resource issue in Bangladesh due to the increasing trend of pollution sources. A study of surface water quality of Dhanmondi Lake has been carried out to examine the exact level of physicochemical parameters of the lake water and the presence of coliform. Temperature, total dissolved solid, specific electric conductance, pH, dissolved oxygen and biological oxygen demand were 22-22.2°C, 530-1350 ppm, 0.78 to 2.12 μS /cm, 6.64 to 6.75, 3.64 to 5.42 mg/L and 3.01 to 4.30 mg/L, respectively. From the pollution map of Dhanmondi Lake, it can be stated that the sampling point near the shurdhoni area is highly polluted and exceeded the standard limits. This pollution was due to the dumping of organic waste in the lake and linkage of sewerage line into the lake. The contents of EC, TDS, DO and BOD of water exceeded the permissible limit of standard values in some sampling points. The whole research was conducted in December, which indicates the pollution status of Dhanmondi Lake in dry season. The present study indicates that the quality of Dhanmondi Lake water was not good enough to maintain public health and needs proper management for the balance of ecosystem by ensuring water quality.

Objectives:

1. The study aims to investigate the pollution status of Dhanmondi Lake along with to develop a pollution map to fix the highly polluted area and the possible sources.

Methodology:

Water from 15 different points of Dhanmondi Lake was collected on December, 2009. All water samples were stored in sterilized polypropylene conical tubes. To prevent the precipitation 10 drops of 2M HNO3 were added to the samples. Total number of sampling sites was 15 and the GPS data of each sampling site was also recorded (not shown). The water pH, dissolved oxygen (DO), specific electric conductance, salinity, temperature, total dissolved solid (TDS) and iron (Fe) were measured immediately at each sampling point by respective digital meter. Only for BOD, water samples were collected in BOD bottles of 300 ml capacity. Among the 15 samples, only 3 selected samples were analyzed for presence of Coliform. Aeration during sampling was avoided as far as possible. The rest of samples were immediately carried to the Environmental Science laboratory of Jahangirnagar University & analyzed within an hour of collection or storage at 4⁰C. Furthermore, extensive questionnaire survey was conducted with 100 respondents of different profession and age who are directly or indirectly connected to the Dhanmondi Lake. It was conducted between 15th January to 22nd January to measure the behavioral change of people.

Achievement/Findings:

From the present study, it can be concluded that water quality of Dhanmondi Lake is far away from the standard of recreational water. The contents of EC, TDS, DO and BOD in water samples exceeded the permissible limit of standard values in some sampling points. Moreover, pathogens, metals, acid and bases, solid and liquid wastes increased and also biodiversity, tourism, migratory birds etc are decreased. The lake was considered to be polluted through industrial effluents, municipal waste, agricultural waste, sewage disposal etc. and the water becomes poisonous. The toxicity of the lake leads to many socio-economic as well as environmental consequences. The overall study states that the quality of Dhanmondi Lake water was not good enough to maintain public health and required proper management for the balance of ecosystem by ensuring greatest water quality. It will be more efficient if further investigation related to the water quality of the lake can be carried out at the wet season to compare the pollution with dry season.
