Nutrient Status of Rice Paddy at Different Stages Under Gypsum and Ammonium Sulphate Fertilizer Applications at Different Intervals of Submerged Conditions

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

A Greenhouse experiment was set up with Kalma soil series to evaluate the efficiency of Gypsum and Ammonium Sulphate fertilizer applications for the nutrient status of S.N. and P at tillering, panicle and harvesting stages of paddy and paddy grain. The treatment combinations were control, Gypsum and Ammonium sulphate at the rate of 5,10 and 15 kg/ha, giving rise of sulphur by 2.5, 5.0 and 7.5 ppm, respectively; under different intervals of submerged conditions. The chemical analysis showed that the nutrient uptake of paddy increased significantly with the increase in sulphur applied in the form of fertilizers. The maximum content of 1.72 and 1.65 gms of nitrogen was observed in Ammonium sulphate and Gypsum treated paddy stein at tillering stages over the control of 1.42 gm. respectively. In panicle and harvesting stages, the nitrogen contents of stem gradually decreased to 1.30 and 0.86 gms for Ammonium sulphate and 1.28 and 0.86 gms for Gypsum respectively, over the control, The maximum SNP contents in paddy grain showed 0.158, 1.37 and 0.29 gms with Ammonium sulphate and 0.148, 1.26 and 0.2 of gms with Gypsum treatments, over the control of 0.108, 0.85 and 0.20 gms respectively.

Objectives:

To evaluate the efficiency of Gypsum and Ammonium Sulphate fertilizer applications for the nutrient status of S. N. and P at tillering, panicle and harvesting stages of paddy and paddy grain.

Methodology:

On the basis of Gypsum and Ammonium Sulphate fertilizer application to 6 kg of Kalma series soil/pot, the input, were as follows: Gypsum treatment combinations Gy_l, Gy₂, Gy₃ and Ammonium sulphate treatment combinations As₁, As₂, As₃, at the rate of 5,10,15 kg/ha giving rise to 2.50, 5.00 and 7.50 ppm of ammonium sulphate respectively. Soils in pots were submerged before fifteen days of plantation of paddy seedling BR-4, Intermittent submergence of soils with approximately 5cm. of standing water was maintained at different intervals of paddy growing period.

Achievement/Findings:

It was however found out on the scientific evidences that applications of ammonium sulphate would be advantageous for crop yield on short term, while gypsum would be beneficial for crops and soils in the long run.
