Water Supply and Sanitation Practices of Poor People of Kalapur Union of Moulvibazar, Bangladesh

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

In this study an attempt has been taken to know the previous and present water supply and sanitation condition of this area by questionnaire survey and to evaluate the progress. Besides, some water quality tests were performed to know the efficiency of the water supply units. The survey showed that the present condition of water supply and sanitation is quite good compared to the previous condition. The improvement of water supply and sanitation facilities and their knowledge was a combined effort of the local people and the organizations mentioned above. Awareness programs, local participation and supplying the facilities together made the improvement sustainable. The water quality testing results of the plants satisfied the Bangladesh drinking water quality standard.

Objectives:

1. The objectives of this study were to know the previous and present conditions of water supply and sanitation facilities in this area; evaluate the progress; the participation level of the local people in the projects taken by DPHE, NGOs and CBOs; check the sustainability of the projects.

Methodology:

Kalapur Union is a hilly region located in Srimangal Upazila of Moulvibazar district. Most of the people living here are settler coming from Chandpur, Comilla, Noakhali, Feni and other districts. The socio-economical condition of this people is very poor. These people have no own land to stay here. GOB is the owner of the land and other resources of that area where they live. In this paper an attempt has been taken to know about the previous and present water supply and sanitation conditions of the Kalapur Union of Moulvibazar district by visual inspections, questionnaire surveys, and some meetings with local people, as well as with DPHE, NGO Forum, other NGOs and CBOs. Besides, some water quality tests were performed in the laboratory of Civil and Environmental Engineering Department, Shahjalal University of Science and Technology, Sylhet to know the efficiency of the installed water supply units: Dug Well, Ring Well, Rain Water Harvesting Plant and Arsenic-Iron Removal Plant.
