Sulphur Balance for Rice Soil

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

A lysimeter experiment was carried out at Bangladesh Agricultural University, Mymensingh on a silt loam soil of the Non-calcareous Dark Grey Floodplain to investigate the effect of phosphate fertilization on S loss from the soil and S balance for Boro-rice (Mala). Three phosphate Fertilizer rates (0, 60 and 120 kg P₂O₅/ha) were used in the experiment, which were replicated thrice in a randomized block design. Sulphur accession to the soil through rain water was 2.3 kg/ha, while irrigation water added 15 kg S/ha to the soil during the cropping period. Phosphate fertilizer treatment appeared to have dominant effect on S loss in soil. Phosphate treatments increased S loss in lechates over control by 5.5-10.9 kg/ha. A negative S balance for rice was generated under phosphate fertilizations, when S inputs and S loss were used to draw the balance sheet.

Objectives:

To evaluate loss of S from the soil and sulphur balance as affected by the application of different rates of phosphorus in the Boro season under BR 2 (Mala) rice crop.

Methodology:

The experiment was carried out in 9 lysimeters at Bangladesh Agricultural University, Mymensingh on a silt loam soil of Non-calcarious Dark Grey Floodplain (classified as Haplaquept), Soil pH, organic C, total N, available P, S and exchangeable K were 6.6, 0.82%, l1.09%, 13 ppm, 8.6 ppm and 13 me% respectively. The experiment was carried out in the Boro season (February-May) of 1991 using HYV rice BR-12 (Mala) as the test crop. Three rates of phosphorus were used in the experiment, viz. 0,60 and 120 kg P₂0₅/ha with basal application of N, K and S @ 80 kg N, 40 kg K₂0 and 20 kg S in a hectare respectively. One-third of nitrogen with full dose of potassium and sulphur were applied at the time of planting. Remaining two-thirds of nitrogen were applied in equal installments at tillering and panicle initiation stage. Urea, TSP, MP and Gypsum were used as the sources of nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium and sulphur respectively. The experiment was carried out in a randomized block design having each treatment replicated thrice.

Application of phosphate appears to increase loss of sulphate from the soil. Rate of sulphur application for rice should be increased matching the rate of phosphate application.
