Intercropping Pulses with Leucaena Leucocephala to Meet the Subsistence Needs

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Intercropping pulses with different spacing of Leucaena was studied at the Multilocation Testing ( MLT) site Magura (AEZ 11a ) during 1994-95 to meet the essential needs of food, fodder and fuel wood in subsistence farming. Leucaena was grown with 100 x 50 cm, 200 x 50 cm and 300 x 50 cm spacing as sole and intercropped with Mungbean and Lentil sequentially. Leucaena was detopped after harvest of Mungbean and Lentil for fodder and fuel wood. Closed-planted sole Leucaena became taller than others. Stem diameter was widened significantly then-planted sole Leucaena. Fodder and fuel wood yield per Leucaena plant increased gradually with planting distance but the yield on area basis followed the reverse trend. Intercropped mungbean and lentil produced significantly higher grain yield with 100 x 50 cm Leucaena spacing indicating long-term study.

Objectives:

Methodology:

The experiment was conducted during 1994-95 at the Multilocation Testing site, Magura in the Southwest region of Bangladesh. The area is located on the High Ganges River Floodplain in AEZ 11a. The study area is under high lands with sandy loam soils. The soils were calcareous in nature with pH slightly above 7.0. The experiment was conducted in RCB design with three replications. Leucaena was grown as sole and in association with field crops with 100 x 50 cm, 200 x 50 cm and 300 x 50 cm spacing in both the cases. The field crops, lentil and mungbean were grown sequentially both as sole and as intercrop with Leucaena. Four month-old seedlings of Leucaena were planted during the second week of July 1994. Mungbean was sown on fourth week of July 1994. Lentil followed to mungbean. Leucaena plants were detopped twice after harvest of lentil. Detopping was done at the man height (170 cm). Plant height was measured before detopping Leucaena. The leaves and branches obtained from detopping were measured as fresh and dry weights and considered as fodder and fuel wood, respectively. Periodical measurement of basal diameter (BD) and diameter at breast height (DBH) were recorded three times to observe the growth rate of Leucaena under different treatments. Yield of mungbean and lentil was also recorded.

Achievement/Findings:

From the results it is evident that intercropping pulses with Leucaena at 100 x 50 cm spacing at the early stages might be an efficient land use option under less fertile sandy loam soil condition. The system could generate fodder and fuel wood in addition to food grain production to meet essential needs in subsistence farming and to sustain future production.
