The growth performance of post larvae (PL) of freshwater prawn (Macrobrachium rosenbergii, De Man) of three coastal rivers of Bangladesh was compared under controlled condition in 10 m2 hapas in triplicate at the Fisheries Field Laboratory, Bangladesh Agricultural University, Mymensingh over a period of 70 days. PL were collected from the Pasur River of Bagherhat (Treatment 1, i.e. T1), the Paira River of Barguna (T2) and the Naaf River of Cox’s Bazar (T3) and stocked in hapas at 3 PL m-2. The mean weight of PL of T1 (0.232 g), T2 (0.233 g) and T3 (0.228 g) did not differ significantly (P<0.05). PL were fed twice daily with prawn nursery grade feed initially at 10% of body weight per day for 15 days and gradually reduced to 5%. Water quality parameters and plankton abundance were recorded at monthly interval, while the growth performance and survival rate were determined at the end of the study. Water quality parameters and plankton abundance among treatments did not differ significantly (P>0.05). Survival rate of PL differed significantly (P<0.05) among treatments with higher value in T1 (68%) followed by T2 (43%) and T3 (39%). Although the average individual final weight of PL did not differ significantly among treatments, it was apparently higher in T1 (1.51 g) than in T2 (0.90 g) and T3 (1.30 g). PL of Pasur River showed comparatively better growth and survival performance than PL of other two rivers.

1. The growth performance of post larvae (PL) of freshwater prawn (Macrobrachium rosenbergii, De Man) of three coastal rivers of Bangladesh was compared under controlled condition in 10 m2 hapas in triplicate.

Experimental site and design - A 70-day experiment was conducted from August to October, 2008 at the Fisheries Field Laboratory, Bangladesh Agricultural University (BAU), Mymensingh. Nine rectangular earthen ponds with an area of 100 m2 and an average depth of 1.0 m each were used for 3 treatments. In each pond 10 m2 (4.0 m x 2.5m) sized hapa were installed. Pond preparation and PL stocking - All unwanted fish were eradicated from the ponds by rotenone application at the rate of 2.5 g m-3 seven days before stocking of PL in hapa. PL were collected through traditional PL collectors from three coastal rivers namely, the Pasur River of Bagherhat (T1), the Paira River of Barguna (T2) and the Naaf River of Cox’s Bazar (T3), and transported to the Fisheries Field Laboratory, BAU. Sufficient oxygen supply was ensured inside the polythene bag containing PL. The PL were acclimatized well and stocked in the hapas. The initial average weight of PL in T1, T2 and T3, respectively were 0.232 g, 0.233 g and 0.228 g. The stocking density in each hapa was maintained at 3 PL m-2. PL were fed twice daily with prawn nursery grade feed initially at 10% of body weight per day for 15 days then gradually reduced to 5%. Water quality analyses - Water quality parameters were measured monthly. Transparency of water was measured with a Secchi Disc. Water temperature and dissolved oxygen were measured by a digital DO meter (YSI, model 58) and pH was measured by a direct reading digital pH meter (Jenway, model 3020) on the spot. Water samples were collected in 250 ml plastic bottles using a tube sampler vertically placed along the entire depth of water column. Then the samples were carried back to the laboratory and 100 ml of water from each bottle was filtered through glass microfiber filter paper (Whatman GF/C) with the help of an electric air pump. These filtered water samples were used for nutrient analyses. The determinations of nitrogenous compound were performed by a HACH kit (model DR-2010, direct reading spectrophotometer). Nitratenitrogen (NO3-N) was determined by using NitraVer- 6 and NitriVer-3 powder pillows, nitrite-nitrogen (NO2-N) was determined by using NitriVer-3 powder pillow, ammonia-nitrogen (NH3-N) was determined by using Rochelle salt and Nessler reagents and phosphate-phosphorus (PO4-P) was determined by using Phosver-3 powder pillow. Chlorophyll-a was measured from the filter papers used for filtering the water samples. The filter papers were dissolved in 10 ml acetone and kept over night, then centrifuged (Denlay centrifuge, model BS-400) for 10 minutes at 3,000 RPM and chlorophyll-a was determined by a spectrophotometer (Milton Roy Spectronic, model 1001 plus). Plankton enumeration - Plankton samples were collected monthly from each hapa. Ten liters of water sample was taken from different places and depths of the hapa and passed through fine mesh (25 μ) plankton net. Filtered samples were taken into a measuring cylinder and carefully made up to a standard volume of 50 ml. Plankton was counted using a Sedgewick-Rafter counting cell (S-R cell) under a binocular microscope (Olympus, CH-40, Japan). Plankton identification was performed. Harvesting - After 70 days all PL were harvested from each hapa. They were weighed, measured and counted separately to evaluate the growth performance and survival rate. Individual weight gain was calculated by deducting the average initial weight from the average final weight. Specific growth rate was calculated as follows: SGR (% bw d-1) = [Ln (final weight) – Ln (initial weight)] ÷ Culture period in days × 100. Statistical Analysis - One-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) was performed for the statistical analysis of data. If the main effect was found significant, the ANOVA was followed by Duncan’s test. All statistical tests were carried out at a 5% significance level using SPSS (Statistical Package for Social Sciences) version 11.5.

The study revealed that the PL of freshwater prawn (M. rosenbergii) of Pasur River stock performed significantly higher survival as well as apparently better growth under on-station controlled condition than that of the Paira River and Naaf River stocks. Therefore, freshwater prawn farming using the PL of the Pasur River stock might result better production and profit. Hatchery operators may be advised for rear PL of the Paur River stock for developing their brood-stocks so that they can produce quality PL. However, further advanced genetical research in this regard is needed to understand the reasons for better performance of the Pasur stock than others.
