Color, salinity, phenols, total hardness, chloride, alkalinity, Ca-hardness, Mg-hardness, minimum-maximum and lowhigh tide water flow rate of river were analyzed to obsere the present water quality of Shitalakhya river and the potential impacts to the river itself and its adjoining community were thoroughly explored. The outcome of raw water quality of the river has been significantly deteriorated and changes in the livelihood of the surroundings have been consequently reported. The highest average color was recorded to be 5772.9 Co-pt at factory outlet of Narayanganj Pourashava sampling point followed by 4185 Co-pt, 3357.22 Co-pt, 2876.67 Co-pt, 1921.42 Co-pt at Godnail, Demra, Rupganj, and Sonargaon, respectively. The lowest color was recorded to be 148.42 Co-pt and 96.8Co-pt at Shitalakhya and Meghna control point, respectively.

1. The present study has been designed to obsered physiocochemical properties of water of Sitelakhya river and their measures.

A relatively small-scale base/site map was developed depicting the project area, sampling locations, and major water bodies, land, and road characteristics for convenient and effective sampling. During study the raw water samples were collected from the previously defined factory outlet and that of adjacent to the main river. Two control points were selected at the mouth of Shitalakhya and Meghna rivers. Spectrophotometric, digital titrator and multi parameter meter were used in the laboratory for characterization of raw water samples of textile effluents sampled from the immediate outlet of the factory and further to the down stream. The HACH analytical methods endorsed by USEPA were used in the laboratory. During this analysis various methods were used (HACH, 2002, Environment Canada, 1995). The following sampling equipments were used for effective sampling activities, such as portable turbidimeter (HACH Model 2100P), 240V, 50/60Hz. Model: 205, Temp. Range: 0 to 450C, temp. uniformity: ± 0.05 at 200C. Capacity: 4 CFT. Interior Dimension; (W×H×D): 16.5×17.5×24 inch, DRB200. Digital Reactor Block, 90 to 240V, 50/60Hz. was designed for Photometric method. Capacity: 15 vial (16mm dia), the HACH methods that utilizes this reactor include: total N2, total phosphorus. The Platinum-Scale /pt-Co were also used for color estimation. Analytical data were properly grouped and transferred in SPSS and Excel spread sheet for statistical analysis and subsequent graphical representation. Descriptive statistics, one way ANOVA, univariate general linear model with Duncan multiple range test (DMRT) were also accomplished. Location of the Study: The research study took place between 23034'07.57"N 90032'07.65"E to 23047'48.68"N 90031'42.27"E section of Shitalakhya river under Narayanganj district of Bangladesh. The textile clusters in five locations (i) Narayanganj Pourashava, (ii) Godnail, (iii) Sonargaon, (iv) Demra and (v) Rupganj have been found around the bank of River Shitalakhya river during 2006-2007 calendar year, under the district of Narayanganj in Bangladesh. Intervals and numbers of samplings: The samplings were performed 12 times at different intervals throughout the study period during January 2006 to January 2007 which are graphically presented. The samplings have been spread over the whole year to get the real status of the raw water quality at effluent releasing point at factory outlet and the adjacent river ways.
