Study on the Fecundity of Spotted Murrel, Channa Punctatus (bloch)

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The fecundity of 70 gravid female fishes of Channa punctatus was collected from Chiraton Beel of Mymensingh district during the period of May 2009 to July 2009. Fishes were divided into three groups on the basis of total length ranges. The groups were viz., A (18.1-21.00 cm), B (16.3-17.00 cm) and C (12.1-15.00 cm). The fecundity of group A was estimated 10,194- 17,359 with a mean of 1452.20±2060, in group B 8,229-12,671 with a mean of 9,528±1478.56 and in group C 2368-8528 with a mean of 5178±1676. The average ova diameter varied from 0.68 to 0.97 mm with a mean of 0.87±0.05 for group A, 0.79±0.06 for group B and 0.73±0.04 for group C. Numbers of eggs per gram body weight increased with the increase in total length of the fish. The mean value of gonad somatic index (GSI) was 8.44±0.91, 8.26±0.91 and 9.10±0.56 of group A, B and C respectively. The regression equation of the relationship between total length and fecundity was F = 0.1248 TL3.9243, F = 0.1284 TL3.956 and F = 0.298 TL3.016 in group A, B and C respectively. The regression equation of the relationship between body weight and fecundity was F = 114.0 BW +4626, F =139.8 BW+1759 and F = 186.2 BW + 962.6 in group A, B and C respectively. The regression equation of the relationship between ovary weight and fecundity was F = 1348 OW + 4622, F = 1712 OW + 1523 and F = 2376 OW + 2100 in group A, B and C respectively. The fecundity was highly correlated with the total length, body weight and ovary weight and C. punctatus is a medium fecund fish.

Objectives:

1. The research work was undertaken to estimate the fecundity of the species. The results will be helpful for fisheries biologist, scientist, breeders, and also hatchery managers.

Methodology:

Sample collection - A total of the 70 gravid females of Channa punctatus were collected from Chiratol Beel at Trishal in Mymensingh district during May-July 2009 for the fecundity study. At least 24 fishes were collected in each month. After collection of the specimen the color, fins, abdomen status were observed and recorded. The specimens were preserved in l0% formalin and labeled. Then the specimen was brought to the Aquatic Ecology Laboratory of Bangladesh Agricultural University (BAU), Mymensingh for further study. Abdomen of gravid female was bulging, pectoral fin smooth and slippery. Genital opening of female was seemed to slight reedish. Eggs were out with gentle pressure on the abdominal region from anterior to posterior. Measurements of total length, body weight, ovarian weight and ova diameter - The total length and the body weight of each specimen were recorded separately to the nearest centimeter scale and gram respectively. The total length was measured by a wooden measuring board. The weight of the specimens was taken by an electric balance. The paired ovary of the individual fish was removed intact and carefully placed in 10% formalin. The preserved ovary of each fish was taken from the formalin and washed and cleaned with distilled water and dried the surface of the ovaries with blotting paper. Then the weights and length of the ovary were taken by using electric balance and scale. Diameters of the eggs were then measured with the help of an ocular microscope filled with coulometer. Fecundity estimation - mGravimetric method seemed to offer the best possibility of minimizing error due to its sample and easy sampling techniques. The gravimetric or weight method has been successfully used. Calculation of the Gonadosomatic index (GSI) - Gonadosomatic index is the percentage of gonad weight to the total weight of the fish. The gonadosomatic index of the collected fish was calculated for each of the female separately. Data processing - The relationship of different parameters such as total length and fecundity, ovary length and fecundity, body weight and fecundity and ovary weight and fecundity were determined as simple linear relationship with the help of MS Excel software and coefficient of correlation (r), regression co-efficient (b), regression equitation were also determined.

Achievement/Findings:

The present observation reveals that C. punctatus is a less fecund fish compared to carps, catfish and other air breathing fish. Lower number of eggs might also be correlated with shorter development time and mortality rate of fingerling, which means higher survival rate. This less number of eggs does not prove to be a disadvantage in reproductive potential. However, low fecundity fish can be attributed to exhibit parental care towards their progeny in order to compensate ova paucity.
