Study on Growth and Flower Yield of Five Snowball Varieties

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

A pot experiment was carried out at Horticultural Farm in Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University, Dhaka, during October 2012 to March 2013. The study was consisted with five varieties of snowball chrysanthemum viz. V₁, White mum; V₂, Pink; V₃, Chandramukhi; V₄, Purple and V₅, Bronze and was designed in CRD with three replications. Plant height, number of leaves, number of branches, days to first bud initiation, number of flowers bud, flower diameter, days to flower initiation and number of flowers as well as chlorophyll percentage and leaf area showed significant variation among all varieties. White mum significantly performed in maximum number of flowers (21.4) and minimum (15.1) was from Bronze. Early flower bud initiation (27.3 days) and flower initiation (30.0 days) were also found from White mum.

Objectives:

1. To recommend suitable variety for cut flower industry, along with local peasantry can be benefited to grow chrysanthemum for retaining maximum flower yield.

Methodology:

An experiment was conducted at Horticulture farm in Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University, Dhaka-1207 during the period of October 2012 to March 2013 to evaluate the snowball chrysanthemums flower, quality and production. Suckers of chrysanthemum were collected from different Nursery of Dhaka with three treatments and treatments were laid out as completely randomized design (CRD) along with three replications. Five snowball chrysanthemums were exerted and settled up for experiment in field conditions, and followed with White mum, V₁; Pink, V₂; Chandramukhi, V₃; Purple, V₄ and Bronze, V₅ respectively. Decomposed cowdung (250g/pot) and a little amount of inorganic fertilizer were applied at N:P:K @ 1:1:1 ratio. Irrigation was applied frequently by visual observation. Leaf area was determined by non-destructive technique using CL-202 Leaf Area Meter (USA) and mature leaf under the lower surface of plant was taken for measuring leaf area. Chlorophyll percentage was also measured by non-withering method using chlorophyll meter (SPAD) and full grown leaf under the lower surface of plant was obtained for measuring chlorophyll percentage by non-destructive method. Data were recorded in different days after pinching at 30 DAT, 50 DAT and 70 DAT respectively and calculated for statistical analysis in MSTAT-C software program. Mean comparisons was conducted and analysis of variance for each of treatment was represented by F-test. Differences between treatments were evaluated by Least Significance Difference Test (LSD) at 5% level of significance.

Achievement/Findings:

Considering the all results showed the significant variation with five different snowball varieties. Maximum flower size and number of flower was found from V₁ (White mum). Early flower bud initiation and flower initiation was found from V₃ (Chandramukhi), V₄ (Purple) and V₅ (Bronze).
