Assessment of Groundwater Resources and Safe Utilization in Different Geo-hydrological Regions-1992

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

A study has been taken to determine the fluctuation range of groundwater level over time and its relationship with rainfall and river stage and to determine the aquifer characteristics and the static water level and discharge relationships of various aquifers.The study is being conducted at BRRI farm, Gazipur since 1979. Maximum depth to ground water table was 13.0 m in the month of April 1992 and the minimum was 6.96 m in the month of January in the same year. The maximum water table depth in the last dry season of 1992 was due to lower amount of rainfall. Another reason of declining trend of water table may be due to excess withdrawal of water without being recharged during the dry season. Therefore, for safe utilization of groundwater in Gazipur area care should be taken for selecting proper spacing of wells and their level of utilization with appropriate cropping patterns in the service areas of the tubewell. It was also observed from the recorded data that the declining trend of groundwater level warns the use of shallow and hand tubewells
