Preservative Treatment of Rubber Wood (heven Brasiliensis) to Increase It’s Service Life.

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Rubber wood (Hevea brasiliensis) possess excellent properties for interior designing, wood working and furniture making. But it is very much susceptible to sap stain and mould fungi which decreases the service life. For profitable uses, it is necessary to increase the service life of rubber wood. To protect the rubber wood from wood degrading agents, the sawn timber were treated with Borax – boric acid solution and Copper-chrome-boron solution by soaking process and Lowry empty cell pressure process following moderate treatment schedule. It was found that rubber wood can be treated satisfactorily by both the processes with acceptable penetration and retention.

Objectives:

To determine the feasibility of treating the rubber timber by soaking process and pressure process.

Methodology:

Rubber logs (30-35 years) have been collected from Raozan rubber estate, Chittagong. Wood samples of sizes 7.5 cm ´ 7.5 cm ´ 20 cm were made from heart wood to determine the treatability by soaking process. The initial moisture content was 130-150%. These sample were dried under sun for 15 days and the M.C. became 20%-30%. Wood samples of sizes 10 cm ´ 10 cm ´ 20 cm were made form heart wood to study the treatability response by pressure process. The samples were kiln dried to around 16% EMC and subsequent experimental works were done by pressure process.Aqueous solutions of 5% CCB (copper-chrome-boron) (2:2:1) and 5% BB (borax-boric acid) (1:1) were prepared by using copper sulphate, sodium dichromate, boric acid and borax. The chemicals were all commercial grades (95% purity). The concentration of the solution was checked by hydrometer.Having determined the moisture content the samples were submerged under 5% BB solution taken in a tank for 2, 4, 6, 8 days.The samples (sizes 10 cm ´ 10 cm ´ 20 cm) were treated with 5% CCB solution employing the Lowry-empty cell pressure process. The following treating schedule was used.

Temperature : (25-35⁰c)

Pressure : 10 kg/sq. cm, 7 kg/sq. cm, 5 kg/sq. cm

Treating period : 1& 2 hours

Preservative chemicals : 5% copper-chrome-boron

After the treatment the treated samples were cut cross-wise and length- wise to measure the side and end penetration. The extent of penetration of preservative inside the timber was measured by chemical test. The measurements were made after twenty four hours of treatment to allow the preservative to diffuse inside the samples.Treated samples were weighed individually before and after treatment to allow calculation of active ingredient retention. The retention of the treated samples were measured according to British standards.
