Postharvest Challenges in Potato Production at Bogra and Joypurhat District of Bangladesh

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

This study was conducted over two years at Bogra and Joypurhat district to find out the postharvest challenges in potato cultivation faced by the farmers. Total 120 respondents from Bogra and Joypurhat district were randomly selected for interview. In order to compare the challenges faced by the farmers, challenge facing index was computed for each aspects. Postharvest challenges were measured in terms of severity. Among the challenges, low market price, lack of marketing facilities and lack of processing facilities were ranked 1^st, 2^ndand 3^rd, respectively during the period of 2010-11. To overcome these existing challenges of potato growers, it is necessary to adopt improved technology and giving financial support in potato cultivation.

Objectives:

To identify the postharvest challenges of potato
To suggest probable solutions for reducing postharvest losses in the two district of Bangladesh.

Methodology:

There were 51 blocks, 17 unions in two selected upazila viz., Shibgonj of Bogra and Kalai of Joypurhat District. About 120 respondents were randomly selected for collecting primary data and information. Among total respondents, 60 farmers from each upazilla were selected for interviewing regarding potato processing, marketing, storing and other related activities. Data and information were collected by the direct supervision of farmers and discussion with them. Data on postharvest problems of potato, their nature and probable suggestions were collected and, those were measured by their severity faced by potato growers. Problems types of not severe, less severe, moderate severe and high severe were scored as 0, 1, 2 and 3, respectively. Giving Suggestions to overcome the existing challenges were transferred in scores; one (1) score was assigned for one suggestion of the respondents. At the beginning of data processing, all qualitative data were converted into quantitative form by means of suitable code and score whenever necessary.

Achievement/Findings:

The potato growers of Bangladesh face a lot of postharvest problems in potato production. Low market price of potato was the highest ranked problem among the extent of challenges faced by the farmers. Also they face, lack of marketing facilities, lack of processing facilities and lack of preservation facilities. GOs and NGOs should provide credit facilities for overcoming their challenges during potato growing season.
