Study on Growth, Flowering and Seed Production of Eight Nandini (eustoma Grandiflorum) Varieties

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

A new study was conducted at roof top net house, Department of Horticulture, Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University, Dhaka, under 2a biotech lab, February 2014 to October, 2014. Eight varieties of Nandini (Eustoma grandiflorum) namely, V₁, Mickey rose; V₂, Pink rose (single); V₃, Pink picotee; V₄, Blue rim; V₅, Chandra; V₆, Pink rose (double); V₇, Blue bell and V₈, Royal violet were used in this experiment. Growth and yield characters were showed significant variation among all varieties. Highest chlorophyll percentage and leaf area were observed in Chandra. Chandra produced maximum number of flower and also showed higher percentage of seed germination, but maximum amount of seeds were produced with Pinky rose (double).

Objectives:

To find out the growth, flow e ring and morphological attributes o f Nandini (Eustoma grandifolium) varieties.
To identify the suitable variety for commercial production in Bangladesh as well as to produce the quality seed.

Methodology:

A pot experiment was laid out at roof top net house, Horticulture Department, Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University under the 2 abiotech lab during February 2014 to October, 2014 to find out the growth, flowering and morphological attributes of Nandini (Eustoma grandifolium) varieties. In the experiment eight Japanese Nandini varieties were used namely V₁, Mickey rose; V₂, Pink rose (single); V₃, Pink picotee; V₄, Blue rim; V₅, Chandra; V₆, Pink rose (double); V₇, Blue bell and V₈, Royal violet. The experiment was carried out in a Completely Randomized Design (CRD) with three replications. Seeds were collected from Sakata Seed Corporation, Japan and were sown in mid February, 2014 in soil of germination trays. Mist irrigation was provided 2-3 times a day and the trays were placed in a controlled growth chamber.

Seedling 80 to 90 days aged, 4 pairs leaves seedling were transplanted into pot. Pot was previously prepared for seedling and placed in a net house and irrigated as required. Sixty three pots with single plant in each pot were used in the experiment. Pot mixture was prepared by mixing well decomposed cowdung, soil, coco dust and sand at a proportion of 1:1:1:1. Data on plant height, number of branches, Number of stem per plant, stem length per plant, stem diameter per plant, number of leaves per stem, days first flower, number of flower buds, flower length, flower head diameter, petal per flower, flower per stem and flowers per plant were recorded carefully. Chlorophyll percentage was measured by non-destructive method using chlorophyll meter (SPAD). Three full grown leaves under the lower surface of plant were obtained for measuring chlorophyll percentage. Leaf area was recorded by CL-202 Leaf Area Meter, (USA) with non destructive method. Collected data were analyzed using the MSTATC program. Mean comparisons was conducted and analysis of variance for each of variety was represented by F-test. Differences between varieties were evaluated by Least Significance Difference Test (LSD) at 5% level of significance.
