Status of Zinc and Copper in Soil Samples of Greater Dhaka Zone

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The present work consists of the simultaneous determination of concentration for Cu and Zn available In the surface and subsurface soil extract at different sampling sites of Greater Dhaka Zone. The research was carried out by using different acid digestion methods and the metal ions were analysed with Flame Atomic Absorption Spectrophotometry (FAAS). Of the four digestion methods tested, it is interesting to note that both the high (46 ppm) and low value (3 ppm) of copper was obtained by extractable cations (HCL + H₂S0₄) method, whereas the highest deposit (174 ppm) of Zinc was found in the bomb-digestion method of subsurface soil. The low (2 ppm) value of zinc was obtained by both the aqua-regia and extractable cations method.

Objectives:

To determine the concentration of copper and zinc available in the surface and sub-surface soil systems in the different places.

Methodology:

The soil samples were collected from surface (0-10 cm.) and subsurface (15-30 cm.) level of various sampling locations from greater Dhaka Zone with seasonal variation throughout the year. The collected soil samples were oven-dried at 110? until constant weight. The soil samples were homogenized in the laboratory using a mortar and pestle of aluminium carbide and sifted with 1 mm. sieve. The dried samples were preserved in polythene bottles. At first 0.5 gm air-dried and homogenized soil was taken in a digestion-bomb. 2.5 ml. HN0₃, 2.5 ml. HF and 0.5 ml. HC10₄ was taken to the bomb. The bomb was closed carefully and heated at 170? for 12 hours in an oven. The solution was transferred to a teflon beaker. The bomb was rinsed twice with distilled deionized water. The solution was evaporated to dryness. 10 ml. extraction solution (50 ml. 1N HCl +75 ml. H₂S0₄) was added to 2 gm. of the ground, air-dried soil sample. The soil suspension was shaken mechanically for 15 minute. The suspension was allowed to stand for overnight. It was filtered through harman # 44 filter paper into a 25 ml. volumetric flask and diluted to the mark with distilled deionized water. 0.5 gm. finely grounded soil sample and 10 ml. aqua-regia was taken to a beaker and allowed to stand for overnight. The solution was evaporated nearly to dryness on sand bath. 5 ml. concentrated HN0₃ was added and evaporated nearly to dryness. 5 ml. distilled deionized water was added and evaporated again nearly to dryness. 2-3 drops concentrated HN0₃ was added further and then warmed with 5 ml. distilled deionized water. The solution was filtered and made upto 10 ml. with distilled deionized water. The standard solutions of copper and zinc were prepared from the stock standard lution. The standard solution was prepared before every determination of the analytes of the present work. After having calibration curve drawn from the standard solutions, the digested soil samples were analysed against a reagent blank by a Flame Atomic Absorption Spectrophotometer. All reagents and chemicals were of analytical grade. Preparation of reagents were made with distilled deionized water. Samples were subsequently analysed for trace element content by Perkin-Elmer 560 Atomic Absorption Spectrophotometer using air- acetylene flame and single hallow cathode lamps.
