Livelihood Improvement of Landless Rural Women Through Technological Interventions of Go-ngo Collaboration

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The main objective of the project was to make aware and develop skill of landless rural women and development workers in utilizing income generating technologies (IGTs). Additionally, steps were taken also to motivate landless rural women towards functional participation in IGTs supported by GO and NGO jointly. The selected IGTs were: i) Homestead mini broiler farming, ii) Homestead fruit gardening, iii) Improved goat rearing. One-day training was conducted for SAAOs and NGO workers on handling and transferring the IGTs to landless rural women folks. Training on selected IGTs was also conducted for landless rural women in three Upazilas of two districts. The Upazilas were Fulbaria and Muktagacha of Mymensingh district and Nakla of Sherpur district. A selected number of household level demonstrations were also conducted with some of the trainees on those IGTs. Additionally, leaflets were published on the three IGTs and distributed among the rural selected women and the concerned GO and NGO workers at field level. The follow-up meetings at demonstration spots showed that a satisfactory level of awareness and interest created among the women who conducted the demonstration and the women in the neighborhood. The participating women got their knowledge and skill improved after completion of training sessions. While the participating SAAOs and NGO field workers knowledge and skill improved in handling and transferring IGTs through the training course. The women conducting demonstrations and their neighbors were made aware of the benefits of the IGTs demonstrated. Knowledge and skill improved due to conducting demonstrations of the participating women while awareness of the surrounding villagers increased due to conduction of demonstrations and meeting at demonstrations. It was felt that there was a strong demand of such technology transfer efforts in the field both for landless women and the concerned development workers. The outcomes are expected to be helpful for the field workers of different nation building departments to improve strategies of extension to work effectively with the vulnerable landless women folks.

Objectives:

To make aware and develop skill of landless rural women, field level development workers in utilizing income generating technologies (IGTs) towards livelihood improvement. This can be achieved through.

a. Demonstrations of selected income generating technologies and meeting at demonstrations, and

b. Publishing and distributing leaflets/folders on selected IGTs to rural women and concerned development workers.

Methodology:

The study locale would be one village each of Muktagacha and Fulbaria upazila of Mymensingh district were DAE has been implementing its collaborative efforts with GGOs to include landless women in IGTs towards sustainable agricultural and rural development. Because, the study will utilize the landless women groups already exist in the locality. SAAO and related NGO workers would be selected from those who already received training on different ITGs from the first phase of this project to conduct demonstrations on the IGTs. Also some leaflet/folder would be developed with the help of experts of relevant IGTs. The leaflets would be distributed among the villagers who will attend the meeting at demonstrations and the relevant NGO workers and SAAO of the Upazilas. The final report will be composed with all the activities done related to conduction of demonstration and development and distribution of extension materials.

Achievement/Findings:

1) The landless rural women are made aware of income generating technologies.

2) Support services for landless women identified towards adopting and participating in income generating technologies for involvem,ent in sustainable agricultural and rural development processes.

3) Landless rural women are trained towards effective participation in IGTs for their livelihood improvements.

5) Improvement and livelihood status of landless rural women appraised through participating in IGTs provided by GO-NGO interactions.

6) Strategies formulated in mainstreaming landless rural women in overall rural development in the country.
