Determination of Soil-moisture Retention Characteristic Curves of Soils from Different Locations of Bangladesh: Rajshahi Area

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The study was conducted to develop soil-moisture retention characteristic curves for soil at different levels of moisture tension and to develop suitable irrigation schedules for selected upland crops based on the soil moisture characteristic curves. Soil samples were collected from selected locations of Rajshahi areas from three different depths of 0-15 cm, 15-30 cm and 30-45 cm. Soil-moisture contents were determined at different pressure with the help of pressure plate membrane apparatus. The soil-moisture characteristic curves were developed for soils of different locations by plotting soil-moisture tension vs. moisture content on squared paper. The moisture content at field capacity and at wilting point were considered to be the upper and lower limits of the soil-moisture characteristic curves.The sample soils of north-west, south-west and north-east high land and south-east low land locations of Rajshahi area were loam, sandy clay loam and sandy loam. The available moisture range of Rajshahi areas were 18.00-7.25, 22.25-9.80 and 16.50-5.80 percent and wilting point started from 7.25, 9.80 and 5.80 percent respectively. Soil -moisture characteristic curve is helpful for determining suitable schedule of irrigation water for upland crops at farm level.
