Performance of Starbro, Hybro and Isa Vedette Broiler Strains Under Identical Management

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

An experiment was conducted with 30 Starbro, 30 Hybro and 30 ISA Vedette straightrun day-old commercial broiler chicks up to 56 days of age to compare the performance of different strains under Bangladesh condition. The final live weight in Starbro, Hybro and ISA Vedette were 1935, 2258 and 2185 g respectively. The respective feed conversion ratio were 3.28, 2.70 and 2.87. The dressing percentage were almost similar in all 3 strains. Livability was slightly higher in ISA Vedette than in other two strains but not significant (p>0.01). The feed cost among three broiler strains were non significant (p>0.05). So, it was concluded that all the three strains appeared to perform equally and satisfactorily under Bangladesh condition.

Objectives:

To study the comparative performance in order to find out the growth, feed efficiency, livability, dressing percentage, cost of production and profit of Starbro, Hybro and ISA Vedette under identical management.

Methodology:

The experiment was conducted at Youth Training Centre, Savar, Dhaka, Bangladesh to study the performances of Starbro, Hybro and ISA-Vedette for a period of 8 weeks (Feb 2 - March 28, 1996). Starbro, Hybro and ISA Vedette unsexed day-old broiler chicks (30 birds from each) were collected from Biman Poultry Complex, Sayar, Dhaka; Eggs and Hens Ltd. Kodda, Gazipur and Usha Poultry Ltd, Nabinagar, Savar, Dhaka respectively considering every strain as treatment groups having 3 replications of 10 birds in each. The ration was composed of locally available feed ingredients and shown in Table 1 with their calculated composition. The feed was offered ad libitum. Broiler chicks were distributed treatment and replication-wise, in previously cleaned and disinfected equal sized 9 separate pens. Each bird was provided with 900 sq cm floor space. Six cm depth fresh and dried rice husk were used as bedding material. At the end of experiment one male and one female broilers from each replicate were randomly selected and weighed for processing ready-to-cook meat. During the processing following parameters were recorded: i. Live weight, ii. Blood loss, iii. Feather loss, iv. Shank weight, v. giblet (liver, heart and gizzard) weight and vi. Dressing percentages. The recorded data were statistically analyzed using analysis of variance techniques by a computer using a MSTAT statistical package in accordance with the principle of completely randomized design (CRD). Significant difference among the treatments were identified using Duncan's New Multiple Range Test (DMRT).

Achievement/Findings:

There were no significant difference among the strains concerning final body weight, feed efficiency and dressing yield. An the strains performed almost equally. But, lSA Vedettee was slightly more adjusted than other two strains. However numerically, Hibro broiler strain was found to attain highest body weight followed by ISA Vedette and Starbro respectively. So, it was concluded that all the three strains appeared to perform equally and satisfactorily under Bangladesh condition.
