A study was done in net house for determining the effect of color ribbons on fruit fly infestation on bitter gourd fruits. Treatment with Nogos 100 EC @ 2 ml/l of water resulted in the lowest infestation by number (20.68%) and weight (20.17%), followed by silver color ribbon treated plants which resulted in infestation of 27.67% by number and 20.49% by weight. Fruits provided with yellow and red color ribbons had higher infestation, yellow color being at the top. The highest infestation was, however, found in fruits of untreated control plants.

1) To evaluate the effect of yellow, red, indigo and silver color ribbons compared with a standard insecticide (Nogos 100EC) and an untreated control.

2) This study will also help to select insect repelling color as a component of IPM package.

The experiment was laid out in a Completely Randomized Design (CRD) with three replications during October 1999 to March 2000 in a net house located at the BSMRAU experimental farm to determine the effect of light reflecting color ribbons on fruit fly oviposition on bitter gourd fruit. To ensure continuous supply of adult fruit fly, naturally infested bitter gourds in two rearing cases having 10 trays with 20 infested fruits were used. Three seeds of local “Gauge corolla” (Momordica charantia L.) were sown in a poly bag. Seven days after germination only one healthy seedling was allowed per bag and 15 day old seedling was transplanted in an earthen pot. For this study three net houses with 64-mesh mosquito net were built. Each net house was provided with 6 pot plants, one healthy plant per pot. Each plant was considered as one replication of a treatment. After transplanting of seedlings intercultural operations like propping, irrigation, weeding, and topdressing of urea were done as and when necessary. Treatment application: The study was undertaken to select the best color ribbon (s), which repel the female fruit fly to lay their eggs. Initiation of female flower occurred at an age of 45 days and fruiting was observed 20 days after flowering. At this stage the treatments consisting of yellow (T1), red  (T2), indigo (T3), silver ribbon (T4), cover spray with Nogos 100EC @ 2 ml/l of water (T5) were applied. An untreated control (To) was also maintained for comparison. Thirty newly emerged adults from the stock culture were released per net house at an interval of 15 days, ( male : female ratio being 1: 1.70 ). During the entire fruiting period adults were released five times at such interval. Data from three plants (replication) of each treatment were recorded. The fruit infestation by number and weight and their reduction over control were determined at each harvest. After harvesting, the fruits were sorted into healthy (HF) and infested (IF) ones separately for each treatment. On the basis of the number of HF and the IF, the percent fruit infestation by number was calculated as under: % fruit infestation by number =(No. of IF)/(No. of HF+ No. of IF) X 100. The fruit fly infestation reduction over control was computed from the infestation by number in different treatments, including in the untreated control. This parameter helps to understand what amount of infestation can be reduced by applying the treatments. The percent infestation over control was computed as:

% infestation reduction over control = ( Infestation  in control - Infestation  in treated plot) / (Infestation in control plot) X 100

Fruit fly infestation by weight was calculated in the same way as for fruit infestation by number. The weight of HF and IF were taken for each treatment at each harvest and were utilized for determining the percent infestation by weight:

% fruit infestation by weight = Weight of IF / (Weight of HF + Weight of IF) X 100

Fruit fly infestation reduction over control by weight was also obtained in the same manner as done for infestation reduction over control by number. % infestation reduction over control by weight = ( infestation by weight in control plot - infestation by weight  in treated plot) /( Infestation by weight in control plot) X 100. Percent weight reduction per fruit due to fruit fly infestation and its reduction over control for the entire reproductive stages were calculated. The weight percent reduction per fruit was calculated as: % weight reduction per fruit = ( Weight of single HF - weight of  single IF) / (Weight of single HF) X 100 and the same over control as: (weight reduction per fruit over control = ( Weight reduction per fruit in treatment  - weight reduction per fruit in control) / Weight reduction per fruit in treatment) X 100

The present study revealed that the female cucurbit fruit fly B. cucurbitae showed preference for yellow and red, and to a lesser extent for indigo color ribbon, while silver color ribbons elicited a very low response. Therefore, the silver color ribbon may be chosen as one of the components of IPM package to study its effectiveness against the cucurbit fruit fly.
