Use of Color Ribbons and Other Management Approaches for Suppressing Fruit Fly on Bitter Gourd

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The study was conducted with a view to evaluating the effectiveness of some color ribbons, mechanical and chemical methods for suppressing fruit fly on bitter gourd during the Kharif season of 1999-2000 at BSMRAU experimental farm. The results indicated that the treatment comprising hand picking of infested fruits plus bait spray with malathion and molasses showed significantly lower infestation (31.83 %) compared to other treatments. Statistically comparable infestation was found in fruits of silver color ribbon (39.12 %) treated plots, hand picking plus bait trap (39.92 %), Nogos 100 EC sprayed plot (41.08 %) and plots provided with red ribbon (42.90 %). Higher yield (9.14 t/h) and yield increase over control (27.30 %) were also obtained from hand picking of infested fruits plus bait sprayed plot which was statistically similar to those of silver color ribbon treated plots (8.82 t/h).

Objectives:

To evaluating the effectiveness of some color ribbons, mechanical and chemical methods for suppressing fruit fly on bitter gourd.

Methodology:

The use of light reflecting color ribbons and some other management approaches in suppressing fruit fly on bitter gourd was carried out in Kharif season of the year 1999-2000 at the experimental farm of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman Agricultural University (BSMRAU). The study included the following treatments T₁: sanitation (removal of infested fruits) plus the use of bait trap); T₂: use of red color ribbon; T₃: spray with Diclorovos (Nogos 100EC) @ 2 ml/liter of water; T₄: use of silver color ribbon; T₅: sanitation (removal of infested fruits) plus bait spray and T₆: untreated control. The treatments were laid out in a randomized complete block design (RCBD) with 4 replications, having unit plot size of 5 m ´ 1 m with an inter- plot distance of 3 m. Five pits of 30 cm ´ 30 cm ´ 20 cm were dug in each plot at a distance of 1 m between pits. Three seeds of bitter guard were sown in each pit. Seven days after germination weaker seedlings were removed and only one healthy seedling was allowed to grow in each plot. Intercultural operations were done as and when necessary.

Setting up of treatments:

Sanitation (removal of infested fruits) and bait trapping (T₁): Infested fruits were removed and destroyed by hand picking through regular observation from early to late fruiting stage and their number, weight, weight of the edible portion of the infested fruits were recorded. A single bait trap consisting of 0.5 ml of Diclorovos (Nogos100EC) mixed with 100g mashed sweet gourd and 100 ml of water (Nasiruddin and Karim, 1992) was used at the centre of the plot of this treatment. Therefore, each of the plots had only one trap. The bait material was changed at 3-day interval.
Use of red color ribbon (T₂) and silver color ribbon (T₄). Red color and silver color ribbons of 25m thicknesses were cut in to 10cm x 1cm pieces and one end of each ribbon piece was attached by stapling to the pedicel of each newly formed bitter gourd fruit. The other end of the ribbon was left free to swing in the air.
Spraying with Diclorovos (Nogos 100EC) (T₃) @ 2 ml/l of water was sprayed over the canopy of the bitter gourd plot starting from flower and fruit initiation stage at 15-day interval. Each plot received four sprays.
Sanitation (removal of infested fruits) plus bait spray (T₅): Sanitation (removal of infested fruits) was carried out in the same manner as described for treatment T_1.

The bait spray was prepared by mixing 12.5g of molasses, 1.25 ml of Malathion 57 EC and 1.25 liter of water. This bait spray was applied over the canopy of the bitter gourd plots uniformly at 15- day intervals from the first fruit initiation stage till a week before the last harvest. Bait sprays were applied four times during the crop period.

Achievement/Findings:

The results revealed that sanitation (removal of infested fruits) plus bait spray (molasses + malathion) reduced fruit fly infestation effectively but considering the safety of human and environment the silver color ribbon can be used as the second option against cucurbit fruit fly on bitter gourd.
