Natural Durability of Some Important Timber Species of Bangladesh.

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

A stake-yard test on 28 indigenous species was carried out to determine their natural durability. The test consisted of burying standard size timber specimens under the ground and recording the time taken to decay. Based on the result durability classification of these timber has been made and suggestions are made for their uses in practice. Since durability of a timber often dictates its preservative treatment, treatability of the same is also furnished along with this classification. It is found that non-durable timbers are more easily treatable then the durable ones.

Objectives:

To determine the life span of twenty eight indigenous timber species in the natural condition of Bangladesh and classify them into different grades of natural durability in contact with moist ground and exposed to weather.

Methodology:

Timbers of twenty eight commonly used species of Bangladesh were procured from the forests of Chittagong and Chittagong Hill Tracts and got identified. Ten test samples in the form of stake of 20 inch (50.80 cm) ´ 2 inch (5.1 cm) ´ 1 inch (2.54 cm) were prepared and air seasoned to EMC conditions. The stakes were made from clear heartwood and were free from knots, stain, decay, insect holes or other deformity or defects.The stakes were buried to their half length in the ground of the forest Research Institute’s stake yard. They were buried at 10 cm apart in a row and 30 cm between rows. One row contained 10 stakes of a species. In all, there were 28 rows of stakes for 28 species.The stakes were inspected at least four times a year. The inspection was done by a punch on the stakes still in the ground. If the stakes broke they were considered destroyed. If not, the stakes were drawn out of the ground and the condition of the portion of stakes under the ground was recorded. They were then reburied. The process of recording data was continued till the stakes were completely destroyed.

Gradation of 28 indigenous timber species according to their natural durability and treatability.Highly durable (Service life of stake is 37 to 48 months or above):Babla (b), Boilam (a), Chapalish (c), Chickrassi (d), Gamar (c), Haldu (a), Teak (d) and Toon (d).Durable (Service life of stake is 25 to 36 months) :Garjan (a), Jam (d), Jarul (c), Jial Bhadi (d), Keora (b), Kom (a), Mahogany (-), Passur (d), Pitraj (d), Sundri (b), Teak (d) and telsur (a).Moderately durable (Service life of stake is 13 to 24 months):Banderhola (a), Chundul (a) and Civit (a).Non-durable (Service life of stake is 3 to 12 months or only one rainy season): Bean (b), Kadam (a), Moos (a), Pitali (a) and Uriam (a).This classification helps the timber users to arrive at a decision if they would use a particular timber species in its natural state or it requires protection by preservative treatment for a particular end use. Less durable woods were generally more amenable to pressure treatment than the more durable ones. The durable ones are usually impermeable to preservative fluid under pressure.
