Evaluation and Extension of Different Manual Pumps in the Farmers Field

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

This project was undertaken with a view to evaluate three promising manually operated pumps in the farmers’ field and also asses he farmers’ views and opinion about them. Three research sites were selected each year for the purpose. Research sites were managed by the project personnel and demonstration sites by the farmers.The average discharges of BRRI pump, twin treadle and rower pumps were 4.02, 1.07 and 0.97 lit/sec at 1.15, 1.06 and 1.16 m heads respectively. The discharge of BRRI diaphragm pump was higher compared to treadle and rower pumps. Irrigation costs per hectare of rice field by BRRI, Treadle, Rower pumps and Duri were Tk.9582.00, 16145.00, 18997.00 and 13,165,00 respectively on full cost basis and the same were Tk. 1700.00, 1063.00, 18452.00 and 237.00 respectively on cash cost basis i.e. if the labour wages were ignored. On the other hand, the irrigation cost per hectare of rice field by low lift pump was Tk.1688.00.Though the repair and maintenance cost of diaphragm pump is higher than that of treadle and rower pumps but for its high discharge its potential exists in rice field irrigation. On the other hand, treadle and rower pumps are suitable for vegetables crop irrigation.

Objectives:

To determine their economic status of the farmers for effective extension of the pumps

Methodology:

Three types of pumps were used namely;

a) BRRI diaphragm pump

b) MCC Rower pump and

c) RDRS Twin Treadle pump

Site selection: Two types of sites viz the research site and the demonstration sites were selected to conduct the study of two Boro season at greater Barisal district in 1986-87 and 1987-88 and one Boro season at Feni and Chittagong district in 1988-89. Discharges of the pumps were measured. A survey questionnaire was designed to know the socio-economic status of the farmers.

The average discharge of BRRI diaphragm pump was 4.02 lit/sec at 1.15 m head. The average discharge of treadle and rower pump was 1.07 and 0.967 lit/sec at 1.06 and 1.16 m head respectively. The command area of diaphragm pump was about four times as high as the treadle and rower pump.Irrigation cost per hectare of rice field by BRRI, Treadle, Rower pumps and Duri a indigenous devices were Tk. 9582; 16,145; 18989 and 13,165 respectively when considered in full labour cost. But when the operating costs (labour wages) were ignored, the irrigation cost for one hectare of rice field by BRRI, Treadle, Rower and Duri were Tk . 1700; 1063; 1842 and 237 respectively by cash cost basis. The irrigation cost for one hectare rice field by low-lift pump was Tk. 1,688.It was found that the diaphragm of BRRI diaphragm pump was torn in every research and demonstration sites from 1 to 3 times per season. The repair and maintenance cost of BRRI pump was higher than treadle and rower pump.0-0.5 hectare land holding class was higher in the surveyed area.· There is a great potential for extension of manual pumps in the greater Brisal, Feni and some parts of Chittagong district.
