Mycorrhizal Association in Some Plants of Bangladesh

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Root segments of 48 plant species belonging to 27 families were examined for the presence of VAM. Altogether 42 species were found infected with VAM fungi. The intensity of infection varied independently in respect to plant species. Out of these species 4,11 and 27 produced abundant,moderate and poor infection respectively. Leueus aspera, Vitex negundo and Ipomea pescaprae were collected from different Tea estates in Chittagong zone produced abundant infection of VAM fungi. These three species could be considered as good VA Mycorrhizal test plants and as a useful association for tea plants which ultimately help enrich phosphorus uptake. VAM association is also recorded in the roots of Artocarpus heterophylus at the Institute of Forestry

Objectives:

To determine mycorrhizal association in some plants of Bangladesh

Methodology:

Roots of different plant species (forest tree seedling, flower plants, cultivated plants and weeds) were collected from a variety of sites including different tea estates in Chittagong zone. Root samples were collected directly from fields and nurseries in vials. The roots were freed from adhering soil, gently washed and cut into small segments of approximately 1 cm. They were fixed in FAA. The fixed roots were boiled for 5-6 minutes in 10% KOH. The root segments were later washed in distilled water and acidified by emerging for two minutes in 2% (VN) HCI. They were stained in 0.05% trypan blue in lactophenol. Excess stain was removed with clear lactophenol. Teased root segments were mounted in lactophenol and examined for the presence of VAM association. A root segment was considered infected if it showed hyphae, vesicles or any combination of these structural characteristics of VAM infection. Achievement/Findings:

The study confirms that most plant species growing under natural conditions possess VAM. The prevalence of VAM suggests that Mycorrhizal association may be of great importance for plant growth in soils of Bangladesh, which are nutritionally poor especially phosphorus contents. VAM fungi, the obligate biotrophs, are well known for their beneficial effects on the host plant. The host plant also influences the population of VAM fungi by its metabolic activities in the root zone but weeds that grow in tea plantation get associated with VAM fungi, then they can also affect tea productivity.
