Studies on Mesophytic and Mangrove Species in the Poorly Regenerated Areas of the Sundarbans

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Deer browsing is one of the main constraints to raise plantation successfully it he Sundarban. So, fencing is essential before planting seedlings in the sites. Without fencing plantation does not provide successful. Jarul, Sada Koroi and Raintry are the best mesophytic selected species for establishment of plantation in the high land fresh water zone of the Sundarbans. On the other hand Sundri, gewa, passur baen, kankra, kirpa, amur, Dhundhul, golpata, goran, jhana etc. are best selective mangrove species which were selected for planting in the poorly regenerated mangrove forest areas of the Sundarbans. Passur, Baen, dhundul and jhana are highly palatable for deer. Without fencing those species do not survive at all. Sundri, amur and goran may be grown without fencing areas. Baen and kankra and jhana are first growing species in the Sundarban. In case of mesophytic species jarul is very successful in the western high land areas of the Sundarbans. Sada koroi shoed very prompt growth in the Sundarban.

Objectives:

To grow mesophytic and mangrove species in the poorly regenerated areas of the Sundarbans.

To develop nursery and plantation techniques of the mesophytic and mangrove species in the Sundarban.

Methodology:

Suitable sites were selected for raising plantation with mesophytic and mangrove species in the poorly regenerated areas of the Sundarban. Non commercial cover forest area and high land which were not inundated regularly were the suitable sites for establishment of plantation in the eastern part of the Sundarban. Seedlings were raised in the poly bags and fencing were made for protecting the plantation sites with goran poles. Survival and growth data were collected and collated.

Further studies on mangrove species are necessary to assess the performance of various species in the different areas of the Sundarban in order to make a firm recommendation. Jarul, Sada Koroi and Raintry are the best mesophytic selected species for establishment of plantation in the high land fresh water zone of the Sundarban. On the other hand Sundri, gewa, passur baen, kankra, kirpa, amur, Dhundhul, golpata, goran, jhana etc. are best selective mangrove species which were selected for planting in the poorly regenerated mangrove forest areas of the Sundarban.
