Comparative Study on the Changes of Land Use and Soil Nutrients of Moulvibazar

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The survey was conducted in Moulvibazar Upazila under Moulvibazar districts of Bangladesh during 2013 with the object of co-relating the previous nutrient data, analyze the nutrient status, determine the reasons of depletion of nutrient, observe soil fertility condition and consequently find out the reason for land use changing in the particular area. The study area is under the physiography unit named Surma-Kusiyara River Flood Plain. There were mostly three soil series found in the study area notified as Balagonj, Goyainghat and Phagu. A significant change in fertility along with land uses was found in Moulvibazar Upazila. Extensive changes were found in land use in 2013 as compare to 1995. Organic Matter (OM), Nitrogen (N), Potassium, Sulpher and boron range was increased during the period. On the other hand the status of Phosphorus (P) and Zinc (Zn) was sharply decreased during these sixteen years of time.

Objectives:

1.To co-relate the nutrient data, determine the reasons of nutrient depletion

Methodology:

The database regarding the soil were collected from the Reconnaissance soil survey (RSS) 1969, where techniques used were described in the USDA soil survey manuals suit to Bangladesh aspect. For each area surveyed, a series of landscape units along with recent aerial photos of various scales, ranging from 1:16000 to 1:50000, toposheets (1:50000), land set imagines and DLRS maps (1:63360) were used (as base map) to conduct the survey and information was collected regarding 1995 survey report. Around 41 soil samples were collected by taking at least one from each 400 hectare of land (Upazila Nirdeshika Moulvibazar 1995) and a total of 89 soil samples were taken with at least one from each 200 hectare of land during 2013 updated survey through the same method (Updating Upazila Nirdeshika Moulvibazar 2013). In the updating survey (2013), the map was made of 200 hectare greed to at least one from each square. For the procedure of taking sample, BARC (Bangladesh Agricultural Research Council) recommended procedures (FRG, 2005) were followed. For sample collection, top soil (0-20 cm, depending on tillage instrument) was taken from nine places to make a composite sample. After drying, processing and sieving, the samples were chemically analyzed in soil science Division in the central laboratory of Soil Resource Development Institute (SRDI), Dhaka, Bangladesh. Chemical analysis was conducted by specific method for respective nutrients, eg. Nitrogen (%)- Kjeldhal distillation method, Organic Matter (%)-Dry Combustion Method, Phosphorus micro g/g-Olsen and Bray & Curtz method, Potassium meq/100 gm- soil Ammonium Acetate method, Sulphur micro g/g -Extraction of Calcium bi phosphate method, Zinc micro g/g –soil Extraction of DTPA method, Boron micro g/g soil-Extraction of Calcium bi phosphate/Extraction of hot water method.

Achievement/Findings:

Adverse situation was seen in some nutrient status of soil which is the only resource of the Upazilla to produce crops. The status of Phosphorus (P), Zinc (Zn), and p^H was mostly decreased during these eighteen years of time while on the other hand Organic Matter (OM), Nitrogen (N) , sulpher, Boron was increased significantly during this period. The OM content was found increased though it was not up to the optimum level for crop production. It is observed that in inundation land type and land use of the examined Upazilla notably changed. Single cropped area was increased significantly over the time.
