Chemical Characteristics of Soil of Urban and Rural Wetlands of NARShingdi District

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Chemical characteristics of soil of urban and rural wetlands of Narshingdi District, Bangladesh were investigated during July 2003-June 2004. The mean concentrations of pl l, organic carbon, available nitrogen, available phosphorus, potassium and organic matter of urban and rural wetland soils were 5.6, 0.94%, 194.67 /1g/g, 8.53 /1g/g, 61.06 /1g/g and 1.63%; and 5.4, 1.49%, 179.17 /1g/g, 23.06 /1g/g, 48.09 /1g/g and 2.57%, respectively. Objectives:

To analyze chemical properties of soils of some wetlands of Narshingdi district

Methodology:

Seven freshwater wetlands of Narshingdi district were selected for this investigation. These are: one wetland (JR = Joaria Beel) of Monohardi, two wetlands (C'R = Chinadi Beel, PR = Putia) of Shibpur, one wetland (DR= Jinardi) of Palash and three wetlands (AR = Amirgong, SU = Shatirpara, Narshingdi Pourashava: MU = Madhabdi Pourashava) of Narshingdi Sadar (Map-l ), Among them JR. CR, PR, DR and AR are rural freshwater wetlands whereas SU and MU are urban freshwater wetlands. The latitude and longitude of these wetlands are within 24⁰15' N and 9l⁰ E, respectively. Among seven selected wetlands, five rural wetlands (JR., CR, PR, DR and AR) were employed as the "control" group, which may be received less pollutants, and the other two urban wetlands (SU and MU) were served as the "treated" group, which may be received more pollutants. The water retention pattern, depth and some of the catchment characteristics of the studied wetlands have been furnished. The wetlands were studied for three seasons namely pre-monsoon (March - May), monsoon (July - September) and post-monsoon (October - December) of 2003-2004. Composite soil samples were collected from 0-15 cm depth with the help of 'Eijkelkamp Agri-search Equipment' (The Netherlands) and taken in polybags. Moist soil samples were used to determine soil pH and available nitrogen. Dry soil samples after sieving (2 mm sieve) were preserved in polybags to determine other physicochemical properties. The pH or freshly collected moist soil was determined by a Griffin pH meter (Model No. 40). The soil to water ratio was I: 2.5. Organic carbon content of soil was determined volumetrically wet oxidation method. The potassium chloride extractable nitrogen was determined. Extractant was used to extract available phosphorus (P) and then the P content was determined by ascorbic acid method. Neutral IN ammonium acetate solution extractable potassium (K+) ions were determined by Flame photometer (Gallcnkamp). The organic matter content of soil was determined by multiplying the percentage of organic carbon with conventional van Bemmelen's factor of 1.724. Data from the Study were analyzed using the Statistical Package for Socia Science (SPSS) for Windows. Values were expressed as Mean J: SEM (Standard Error of the Mean). Unpaired "t" tests were done as the test of significance to determine the variation a chemical variables of soil between rural and urban wetlands. p < 0.05 was considered as the minimal level of statistical significance.

Achievement/Findings:

Evaluation of chemical characteristics of soil of wetland is a very important event to understand health of benthic and rooted attached hydrophytic communities. The results of the present investigation can be used for environmental impact assessment (EIA) of rural and urban aquatic ecosystem. Further investigation is needed to determine heavy metals of sediment for better management of aquatic resources.
