Bangladesh Agricultural Research Institute , Joydebpur, Gazipur.

Three major agricultural soils were selected for laboratory, green-house and field studies. formation of laboratory and greenhouse studies were used in carrying out field experiments using dominant cropping patterns. A Wheat-Mungbean-T. Aman cropping pattern produced 10.94 ns grain/ha with an application of 435 kg NPKS/ha and removed 659 kg NPKS/ha whereas the Wheat-T. Aus-T. Aman cropping pattern produced 11.64 ton grain /ha with an application of 495 kg Kg/ha and removed 666 kg NPKS/ha. In the Wheat-Mungbean-T. Aman pattern about 100 kg nutrients were added to the soil system when biomass of mungbean was incroporated after first picking. On the basis of the above studies suggestions for fertilizer use in the patterns were made.

  Crop-Soil-Water Management
  Fertilizer

To determine optimum fertilizer doses, and nutrient dance in the soil under predominant and promising cropping patterns using integrated nutrient management approach for fertilizer recommendation.

Three sites have been selected for laboratory, greenhouse and field studies. The sites are: i) Wheat Research Centre, Dinajpur General Soil type-Noncalcareous Brown Floodplain Soil (Udic ustrochrepts, Series-Salender) . ii) Janakinathpur, FSR site, Rangpur General soil type- Grey Floodplain Soils (Eutric Haplaquepts, Series-Pirgacha). iii) Hamdaha, Jhenaidha, Jessore General soil type-Calcareous Brown Floodplain Soils (Aquic Eutrochrepts, series- Gopalpur). Except for N and Mo, the optimum soil treatment for greenhouse study was made on the basis of laboratory and fixation studies data for P, K, S, Mn, Zn, B and Cu. The amounts of these elements added to make the optimum soil treatments were about three times the deficiency critical level. Lime requirement was determined on the basis of extractable acidity, Ca/Mg ratio (optimum being 1.7), Mg/K ratio (optimum being 2.0) and the texture of the soil. Sorghum was used as an indicator plant. Eight plants were allowed to grow per pot upto 6 weeks. Plants were then harvested, dried and weighed. Relative yields were calculated as a percentage comparing yield of treatment with the yield of the optimum. On the basis of greenhouse studies, field trials were initiated in three locations using crops of existing dominant cropping pattern namely; Wheat-Mungbean-T.aman, Potato- Jute T. Aman and Wheat-T. Aus-T. Aman at Dinajpur, Rangpur and Jessore, respectively. The first crop of the cropping pattern received the full doses of the nutrients and the All experiments were laid out in randomised complete block design with three or four replications. Unit plot size was 6m x 5m. Intercultural operations such as weeding, mulching, irrigation etc. were done as per schedule. Normal spray schedules were followed in order to protect from pests and diseases. The crops were harvested at full maturity. Records on some yield parameters were also taken at certain growth stages of the crops.

i) Both greenhouse and field studies have confirmed N, Zn and B deficiencies in the Noncalcareous Brown Floodplain Soils (Udic Ustrochrepts, Series: Salendar) of Dinajpur: N, Zn and Cu deficiencies in the Calcareous Brown Floodplain Soils (Aquic Eutochrepts, Series: Gopalpur) of Jhenaidha and N and P deficiencies in the Grey Floodplain Soils (Utric Haplaquepts, Series: Pirgacha) of Rangpur. ii) P, K and B omission for two years reduced grain yield of wheat at Wheat Research Centre, Dinajpur. iii) Application of N160P80K80S20Zn5B2 for wheat can take care of the two succeeding mungbean and T.Aman crops with application of 15 kg and 120 kg N/ha in Salendar series. iv) Application of N120P60K200S25Zn5 for potato is sufficient for the two successive jute and T.aman crops with application of 60 kg and 120 kg N/ha in Pirgacha series. v) In Gopalpur series Cu addition was beneficial and the compound effect of N120P80K80S25Zn5Cu2 produced the highest grain yield of wheat. An application of only 60 kg and 120 kg N /ha was enough for the two successive T.Aus and T.Aman for obtaining high yields.
