Field Performance of Tafe Tractor with Rotary Tiller in Bangladesh

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Widely use of agricultural machinery for land preparation, minimizing time & cost and maximizing effectiveness has a considerable significance for farming system, in Comilla, Bangladesh. The TAFE Brand Tractor and MASCHIO Brand Rotary Tiller were tested in dry and wetland preparation for different kinds of crops establishment. The field capacity, fuel consumption and field efficiency for dry land operation of TAFE 45 DI tractor with MASCHIO H-165 rotary tiller were experimentally determined to 0.6672 ha/hr, 7.83 lit/hr and 78.81 %, respectively. In wet land operation, the field capacity, fuel consumption and field efficiency of the same machine system were found 0.5919 ha/hr, 7.67 lit/hr and 72.91 %, respectively. The tractor is suitable for farm operations in Bangladesh.

Objectives:

To determine field capacity, fuel consumption and field efficiency of TAFE tractor with rotary tiller under two different land conditions in Comilla district of Bangladesh.

Methodology:

TAFE 45 DI tractor and MASCHIO H-165 rotary tiller were selected to conduct this study. The technical specification of the tractor and rotary tiller are presented. The experiment was conducted in both dry and wet land conditions. Three dry and three wet land experimental plots of size 1000m² (50 x 20) were selected in Comilla district. The soil type of the selected fields was loamy soil. A set of L type blades was mounted on the fixed flanges of the rotary tiller. The inter-flange spacing on the rotor was 228 mm and the mounting of the blades steep spiral on the flanges were kept constant. Two rotor speeds (285 rpm and 205 rpm) of the rotary tiller were used in dry and wet land operations. Tractor operation speed for both the land conditions were maintained at gear level positions low-4 with engine rpm at 1600. The tractor was run at idle condition for 10 minutes to attain the normal working temperature. Thereafter, the rotary tiller was used for field operation both in dry and wet land. The necessary data were collected to determine parameters such as average time of operation (hr/ha), effective field capacity (ha/hr), theoretical field capacity (ha/hr), field efficiency (%), working speed (km/hr), fuel consumption (Iit/ha) and fuel consumption (Iit/hr). The fuel tank was filled to full capacity before and after each trial operation. The amount of refueling measured by a known cylinder was considered as the actual fuel consumption for each operation. The width and depth of cut were measured at random using two steel scales. To measure the speed, two poles 20m apart were placed in the middle of the test run. The speed was calculated from the time required for the machine to travel the known distance 20m.

Achievement/Findings:

The paper highlights the performance of TAPE Tractor with a rotary tiller on dry and wet land operation in Comilla district of Bangladesh. The operational parameters for this machine such as average time of operation (hr/ha), effective field capacity (ha/hr), theoretical field capacity (ha/hr), field efficiency (%), working speed (km/hr), fuel consumption (Iit/ha) and fuel consumption (lit/hr) were examined; and found suitable for farm operation. It is important that farmers using this model of Tractor with Rotary Tiller for any type of crops production should be trained in order to achieve the maximum potential and reduce wastages of fuel and time.
