Operation of Manual Pumps in the Farmers Field in Bangladesh I: a Feasibility Study

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

This study deals with the feasibility of three manual pumps namely, BRRI Diaphragm pump, Twin treadle pump and Rower pump in the farmers fields. The average discharges (1/s) of BRRI, Treadle and Rower pumps were 4.14, 1.06 and 0.93 at 1.11, 1.06 and 1.16 m operating heads respectively. It was also found that two BRRI Diaphragm/ seven Treadle/ eight Rower pumps perform the same purpose for irrigating a hectare of rice field. At full cost basis, per hectare irrigation cost for rice cultivation by the BRRI pump was Tk. 9424.90 which was the lowest among the three pumps. The cost of irrigation for the Treadle, and the Rower pumps were Tk. 15589.00 and 19444.30 respectively. At cash cost basis, these costs were Tk. 1590.00, 1225.00 and 1927.00 respectively for BRRI, Treadle and Rower pumps. Study showed that potentials of BRRI Diaphragm pump exists for its high discharge in rice field irrigation .The Treadle and the Rower pumps might be suitable for small scale vegetable field irrigation.

Methodology:

The following manual pumps were selected for the feasibility study

a) BRRI Diaphragm pump

b) Rower pump and

c) Twin Treadle pump

Site selection: In the Boro season, three sites viz. Kalosgram, Gournadi (Baisal) and Shaitpaika (Jhalokati) were selected for this purpose. The farmers of the sites managed everything except irrigation which was provided by the project personnel with the manual pumps under study.

Socio-economic survey: A survey questionnaire was designed to collect information on the socio-economic status of farmers. Randomly selected 176 (10% of the farm family) farmers were interviewed – 14 from Chamtga, 40 from Shaitpaika, 35 from Karapur, 40 from Kalosgram and 47 from Morakati villages.

Achievement/Findings:

The surface water level in different parts of greater Barisal district varied from 0.70 to 1.55m. This implies that there exists a great potential for efficient use of different manually operated pumps.The discharges (1/s) of the BRRI pump were 4.17 at Kalosgram and 4.18 at Gournadi sites respectively, at 0.75, 0.92 and 1.47m heads. The discharges (1/s) of the Treadle pump at the said places were 1.15, 1.06 and 1.0 respectively at 0.7, 0.99 and 1.5 m heads and that of the Rower pump were 0.90, 1.05 and 0.95 respectively at 0.9, 1.55 m heads.Irrigation cost for the BRRI pump was the cheapest among all the irrigation devices used. Irrigation cost for one hectare of rice field were Tk. 1590 for the RRRI pump, 1225 for the Treadle pump and 1927 for the Rower pump. At full cost basis per hectare irrigation cost of rice field for the power pump was Tk. 1,68,00. Result shows that the irrigation cost for the manual pumps at cash cost basis were comparable to that of power pump. Manual pump could widely be used in greater Barisal district.
