Establishment of a Successful Model Farm with Intensified Land Management for Crop Production in Hill Slope

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

A model farm was established on hill slope at Hill Agricultural Research Station Khagrachari to find out the effect of cover crop and cropping arrangement on different Jhum crops during September 1999 to December 2000. Cover crop showed better performance. In case of combined effect Marfa + cover crop produced maximum yield. But gross return and benefit cost ratio was maximum in sesame when grown after cover crop.

Objectives:

To develop a model farm for intensified land management and better production of crops.

Methodology:

A model farm was established on hill slope at Hill Agricultural Research Station Khagrachari. The model was a duplicate size of typical of the land holding of a "Jhurnmia family". There were four cropping arrangement viz. a) Rice b) Sesame c) Marfa d) Rice + Sesame + Marfa with cover crop of Cowpea and without cover crop. The hill slope was divided into several alleys by contour hedgerow running across the slope in September 1999. The hedgerow consisted of Pineapple, Banana and Papaya. High value timbers and fruit trees were planted on the farm boundaries in August 1999. Legume cover crop like cowpea was sown in alleys in mid September. 1999 . Harvesting of cowpea was done from mid December to mid January. The plants of cowpea were slash and used as mulch after pod harvesting in March 2000. Local variety of Rice, Sesame and Marfa were sown in May 2000. The single crop was sown across the slope in line except mixed crops. The fertilizers Urea, TSP and MP were used at the rate of 150, 150, 75 kg/ha for Rice, 150, 150, 70 kg/ha for Sesame, 100, 150, 100 kg/ha for Marfa and 150, 150, 75 kg/ha for mixed crops. The experiment was laid out in Random Complete Block Design (RCBD) with three replications. Yield of cover crop, hedgerow plants and alley crops were recorded and analyzed statistically. A partial economic analysis was also computed as well to estimate the financial performance.

Achievement/Findings:

Main effect of cover crop and cropping arrangements are presented. Higher yield of alley crops, hedgerow crops and total yield were obtained from the plot where cover crop was grown than that of without cover crop. The legume cover crop restored fertility in the soil. That is why; yield was higher in this plot. San (1998) also found similar result. In case of cropping arrangement single rice, sesame and Marfa produced higher yield than mixed crop. Pineapple production was maximum with rice when it was grown as alley crop and the least was in mixed crop. Banana and papaya also showed similar result but it was not significant. Total yield was maximum in Marfa (16.73 t/ha) which followed by rice (15.95 t/ha), sesame (14.75 t/ha) and mixed crop (14.63 t/ha). Interaction effect between cover crop and cropping arrangement are presented. The highest rice yield (l.84t/ha) was recorded from cover crop + single rice treatment. Sesame and marfa showed similar trend. Maximum yield of pineapple, banana and papaya were recorded from rice + cover crop. Total yield was most satisfactory (17.43t/ha) when marfa was grown single after cover crop. Maximum gross return (Tk. 82,820.00/ha) and net return (Tk. 78,010.00/ha) was recorded from sesame (Single) +cover crop resulting the higher benefit cost ratio (16.2). The result indicated that single cropping arrangement after cover crop is better and economically viable for hill slope.
