Salt Tolerance Limit, Growth and Yield Performance of Some Modern and Liv Aman Rice Grown in Varying Salinity Level

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The relative growth. yield performance and salt tolerance limit of three modern varieties (BR10, BR11 and Pajam) and one LIV (Patnai) rice cultivated in the coastal saline soils under six different levels of brackish water (1.5, 3.0, 4.5, 6.0, 7.5 and 9.0 dS/ m ) managoment for three years were investigated in the field of Benerpota Agricultural Research satation, Satkhira. The growth and yield response of BR10, 11. Pajam and Patnai variety of rice decreased significantly with increasing salinity of irrigation water. Soil tolerance limit indicated that the thresh hold value of BR 10, BR 11, Pajam and patnai are at ECe 3.0, 3.0, 1.5, and 4.5 dS/ m respectively and the critical limits of tolerance to saline water irrigation (ECiw) for 25%, and 50% yield reduction are at 3.52, 3.37,2.74 and 5.62 dS/m and 5.17, 4.95, 4.63 and 7.05 dS/m for BR 10, BR 11, pajam and patnai variety of rice respcetively. Patnai could be selected as the most salt tolerant followed by BR10. Pajam was the most sensitive to salinity.

Objectives:

To evaluate the growth, yield performances and salt tolerance limit of three modern and one UV rice in kharif-II for the fruitful utilization of shrimp field of coastal areas under brackish water management.

Methodology:

The experiment was conducted consequentively for three years (1987-1989) during kharif-II at Benerpota Agricultural Research station, Satkhira. The soil was clayey and saline in nature. There were eighteen experimental plots arranged in RCBD with three replications. Each plot was further sub-divided into four for four varieties of rice. Each sub-plot size was 3 m². The plots were turned buffer in such a way that water could not leach from one plot to another. There were six levels of brackish water treatments. These were 1.5, 3.0, 4.5, 6.0, 7.5 and 9.0 dS/m. The salinity of irrigation water (Eciw) were prepared artificially by diluting the reserved saline river water with shallow tube well water or by dissolving common salt (NaCl) in rain water, A basal dose of 80 kg P₂0₅, 40 kg K₂0 and one third of 90 kg N/ha. were applied. The rest two third of N was applied in two splits at 30 and 50 DAT. Three modern varity (BR 10, BR 11 and Pajam) of rice and one local improved variety (UV) patnai were selected for testing. Uniform 30 days old seedlings were transplanted with three seedlings per hill at 20 X 20 cm spacings. Irrigation waters were applied as per treatment frequently to maintain approximately 5 cm. Standing water on the surface. Rain water was also considered as a source of irrigation water. Knowing the amount of rainfall, the required amount of NaCI was mixed to get the desired salt concentration of brackish water as per treatment. Weeds were removed as they appeared. Rainfall data was collected from the autoatic rain gauge situated at the Research station. The response of plant yield water salinity was determined using the equation.

Achievement/Findings:

Summarization of results suggests that patnai variety of rice is suitable for cultivation upto 4.5 dS/m without significant yield reduction. This variety can be cultivated under brackish water management upto EC 7.05 dS/m level with an expected 50% yield reduction. Among the modern BR 10 has higher salt tolerance limit followed by BR 11. Pajam is highly susceptible to salt tolerance.
