Abstract/ Executive Summary:

A green house experiment was conducted to study the effect of ammonium sulphate on the leaching loss of Ca and Mg from Sylhet tea soils. Ammonium sulphate was applied at four different levels and the leachate was collected at six intervals. The leaching loss of hath Ca and Mg was higher when ammonium sulphate was applied at high doses. Although the absolute loss of Mg was less than Ca for identical fertilizer treatments, the relative loss of Mg was higher when compared with respective control. The losses of Ca and Mg increased upto 2 and 4 weeks respectively and then there was a decline in leaching loss with the advent of time.

Objectives:

To study the effect of ammonium sulphate on the leaching loss of Ca and Mg from Sylhet tea soils.

Methodology:

Soil samples representing the surface soil at a deptn of 0 - 6" were collected from the three topographic regions which cover the entire tea growing areas of Bangladesh. Some of the physical and chemical characteristics of the soils . The soils were treated separately with commercial ammonium sulphate at the rates of 0, 40, 80 and 120 Ibs N/A. Each pot contained 8 Ibs of soil and provided with access tubes at the bottom to facilitate the collection of leachate at any desired time. The moisture regime in the soil was maintained at field capacity. But prior to collection of leachates from the pots about 2 litres of water was added to each pot. Leachates were collected at intervals of 0, 2, 4, 8, 12 and 16 weeks. The volume of the leachates was about 500 ml and it took about 4 hours for the soils to be thoroughly leached. The collected leachates were then chemically analysed.

Ca and Mg contents of the leachates collected at different intervals of time. It may be observed that the total loss of Ca increased at higher rates of ammonium sulphate application. The maximum losses of Ca were 1565.0, 1886.0 and 2436.0 mgm for 120 Ibs N/A from tillah high and low flat soils respectively. In control treatment, the losses were 1219.0, 1303.0 mgm respectively. It is also observed from the table losses were more significant at the initial stage of leaching. It it can be noticed that total loss of Mg increased at higher rates of ammonium sulphate application when compared with the control. The maximum losses of Mg were obtained where ammonium sulphate was applied at the rates of 80 and 120 Ibs N/A. At the treatments of 120 Ibs N/ A the values were 112.0, 132.0 and 150.0 mgm for tillah, high and low flat soils respectively. The corresponding losses of Mg for the control treatments were 57.0, 56.0 and 119.0 mgm respectively. The leaching loss of hath Ca and Mg was higher when ammonium sulphate was applied at high doses.
