Genetic Evaluation of Pabna Cattle at BLRI Research Farm

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The average body weight of adult Pabna bulls was 376.63±11.54 and that of females was 281.53±4.56 kg. The average daily milk yield, lactation milk yield, lactation length, peak milk yield, days peak milk yield, dry period and milk yield per day of calving interval were 3.608±0.81lit, 918.16±284.61 lit, 256.55±61.21 d, 5.56±1.38 lit, 23.45±14.89 d, 2.09±111.63 d and 2.16±0.78 lit, respectively. Age at first heat, age at first calving, calving interval, service per conception, gestation length and post partum heat period of Pabna cows were 843.65±17.77, 1225.24±258.92, 451.65±6.51, 1.50±0.83, 283.31±11.50 and 105.51±3.95 d, respectively. Heritability estimates of lactation milk yield and age at first calving were 0.404±0.087 and 0.404±0.069, respectively. The Pabna cattle changed its morphology (coat color) and production performance (milk & beef characteristics) over the last 15 years of selective breeding. Therefore, in the present situation it may be called as BLRI Cattle Breed-1 (BCB-1). Finally, it may be concluded that the existing breeding goal would be redefined for further improvement of the breed.

Objectives:

To know the genetic merit of Pabna cattle at BLRI research farm

Methodology:

The experimental data of the present study were collected from the record sheets maintained at the Cattle Research Farm, Bangladesh Livestock Research Institute, Savar, Dhaka. Data recorded during the period of 1992 to 2006 were included in this study. Seasons of the year were defined as winter (October-January), summer (February-May) and rainy (June-September). The recorded data were within 6 parities of cows belonging to five generations (foundation to generation four). The collected data were tabulated and analyzed following univariate analysis of Generalized Linear Model (GLM) procedure using SPSSx computer package. The differences in means were tested using least significant difference (LSD) method. Variance and covariance components of each trait were estimated using restricted maximum likelihood (REML), with variance component estimate VCE program . The data were analyzed under a single trait repeatability model. The effect of sex, season and year of birth, parity and generation were included in the analytical model as fixed effects, and that of animal as random effects. Breeding value was estimated on REML estimated variance components using best linear unbiased prediction (BLUP). The mean breeding values for each trait was calculated and plotted in graph against the year of birth to see the genetic progress or retrogress during the period studied. The regression coefficient of mean breeding value on year of birth for a particular trait represented the scale of genetic trends. Inbreeding coefficient of the herd was estimated using Pedigree Viewer software.

Achievement/Findings:

The productive and reproductive traits of importance of Pabla cattle at BLRI research farm have been studied. The milk production of cow may provide logistic support of for daily expenditure on rearing of the cow. reproductive performances like, service per conception, postpartum heat period, and to some extent calving interval are compatible with other indigenous varieties. Average genetic merit of cow on milk production, calving interval, age at first service, and age at first service are in desirable direction.
