Transfer and Impact Analysis of High Yielding Forages to Support Smallholder Dairy Production in Some Selected Regions of Bangladesh

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The study was conducted with close collaboration of BRAC in the four Monga districts namely, Kurigram, Nilphamari, Lalmonirhat and Gaibandha. To achieve the objectives of the project, there were 50 farmers having minimum 2 and maximum 14 dairy cows were selected from Kurigram, Nilphamari, Gaibandha and Lalmonirhat districts. The data so far obtained through field monitoring reveals that out of 37 farmers in 5 upazilla , farmers cultivated high yielding fodder were highest in small farmers ( 24) followed by large (7) and medium (6) farmers respectively. The overall distribution of land for fodder production belongs to highest in large farmers (56.97%) followed by small and medium farmers (22.22, 20.81%) respectively. Similarly, highest average milk production was observed in large farm (43.98 L/farm/day) followed by medium (8.39) and small farm (0.49 L/farm/day), respectively. It reveals that fodder cultivation help to increase milk production but more thrust is needed in future for greater dissemination of high yielding forages in areas. In addition to distribution of cuttings, farmers should be trained on processing, preservation and utilization of high yielding fodder.

Objectives:

To know the impact of fodder production on the productivity of smallholder dairy

Methodology:

The study was implemented with close collaboration of BRAC in the four Monga districts namely, Kurigram, Nilphamari, Lalmonirhat and Gaibandha. All the selected districts are under the agro-ecological zone 2 (AEZ-2) and which is named as Active Testa Floodplain. To achieve the objectives of the project, there were 69 farmers having minimum 2 and maximum 14 dairy cows were selected from Kurigram, Nilphamari, Gaibandha and Lalmonirhat districts. Under Kurigram district, three upazilla’s such as Kurigram Sadar, Bhurangamari and Fulbari were selected and from Nilphamari district, Nilphamari Sadar and Domar upazilla’s were included in this programme. Similarly, from Lalmonirhat and Gaibandha districts, Hatibandha, Lalmonirhat Sadar, Gaibandha Sadar and Sundargonj upazilla’s were selected respectively, for cultivation of forage. In addition to small scale dairy farmers, one commercial farmer of Kurigram district having 42 dairy cows was also selected for large scale production and demonstration of fodder processing, preservation and utilization technology in the respective area. To sustain milk production in those areas during Monga period, high yielding fodder cuttings were distributed among the farmers. Farmers were transplanted the cuttings in their land and monitoring of on-farm activities is under progress. After Ist harvesting/cut the fodder, they fed them to dairy cows and milk production, health status of animals and income from feeding of fodder to the dairy cows were recorded with the help of BRAC field organizers.
