On-farm Demonstration of Processing, Preservation and Utilization of Maize Stover Technology in Some Selected Areas of Bangladesh

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

This study was undertaken to disseminate maize stover technology with the objectives to assess its impact and to identify the problems in adoption of technology under farmers’ condition. The chemical composition of two varieties of maize stover used (BHM-5 and BHM-3) were almost similar (DM, OM, CP, ADF and ash were 29.38; 31.15, 89.22; 90.79, 7.52; 7.97, 42.72; 38.64 and 10.78; 9.21%, respectively) with little variation in DM, ADF and ash contents. It reveals that the DM intake (kg/day) of BHM-5 and BHM-3 did not significantly (P<0.05) differ between the two treatment groups. The values for estimated intake (MJ/kg) were 26.81 ± 0.7 and 27.05 ± 0.75 by the growing bulls fed BHM-5 and BHM-3, respectively, and the difference was non-significant (P<0.05). Similarly, the estimated metabolizable protein (MP) intake did not differ (257.37±6.76 and 259.76±7.19 g/day, respectively) significantly (P<0.05) between the treatments. The gain of bulls were 1.20±0.15 and 1.00±0.06 for BHM-5 and BHM-3 treatment groups respectively. It was concluded that the demonstration of the technology will help the farmers to acquaint with the processing, preservation and utilization techniques of maize stover and also help much quicker adoption of the technology.

Objectives:

To disseminate maize stover technology under farmers’ condition and to assess its impact

Methodology:

A digestibility trial was conducted for a period of 35 days with 12 Pabna growing bulls having similar age to determine the intake and digestibility of maize stover. The animals were divided into two groups (six animals each) according to age and initial live weight differences. All animals were dewormed with broad spectrum anthelmentic at the start of the experiment. Maize stover from the on-station research farm was collected and chopped, using a forage chopper, into pieces up to 2-3 cm long. The stover was ensiled in silo pits, 3 feet width and 3.0 feet deep, with 8 feet with in the middle and 10 feet at the top. Weighed batches of chopped stover were placed in the pit and sprayed molasses plus water solution (Preparation: 3 kg molasses + 3 kg water per 100 kg chopped stover) by using a garden watering can. The stover was mixed and trampled by two to three people to compress and compact it. More batches of stover were then added and treated until the pit was filled. Finally, the pit was covered with polythene sheets and a thick (about 45 cm) layer of soil. At the end of the experiment, a 5 days collection was done to determine the intake and digestibility of different nutrients in maize stover. Data were analyzed using SPSS computer program for paired sample t-test to compare means and SEM was calculated to determined significant difference.
