Performance of Farmers Managed Direct Seeded Mv and Lv Rice Under Rainfed Condition

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

A survey was done to evaluate the performance of farmers' managed dry bed direct-seeded rice in Aus season and to determine the economic benefit from farmers' managed direct-seeded rice in Aus season in a selected location of Mymensingh district. Ten farmers were interviewed from each group of farm. A prescribed questionnaire was used for interviewing the farmers at two stages of the crops (vegetative and reproductive). The data were collected on rainfall, soil moisture status, levee height, intercultural operations and cost involvement for each group of farm. Farmers obtained 1568 kg/ha yield of rice from MV rainfed farm, whereas for LV rice under rainfed condition the yield was only 872 kg/ha. The low yield obtained from both the methods were due to severe drought during the growing period. The gross production cost for MV rice was Tk. 5744/ha and for LV rice was Tk. 3981/ha. The net return from MV dry-bed direct seeded rice was Tk. 1312/ha but that from the LV rice was lower by Tk. 57/ha. The lower return was due to low yield of LV rice during the season. The plant population was higher in MV plots than that of LV plots. However, about 696 kg/ha, higher yield was obtained by adoption of MV rainfed rice over LV rainfed rice.
