Brief Project Activities of Integrated Crop Management (icm) in North-west Region of Bangladesh

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

A PETRRA funded project was implemented in the north-west region of Bangladesh for over all improvement of crop, soil, and water management and sustain crop production of resource-poor farmers in the region. Before project, farmer cultivated Purbahi and BR14 in Boro season. In the project sites (Kurigram and Pirganj) BRRI dhan28, BRRI dhan29 and BRRI dhan36 were demonstrated in Boro season. Among the demonstrated varieties BRRI dhan36 at RDRS site, Pirganj and BRRI dhan28 at GKF site, Kurigram were performed better. Before initiation of the project, traditional seed bed preparation was practiced. Improved seed bed preparation was introduced through training and demonstration.Farmers' convinced to line sowing/spacing and 203 seedlings per hill compared to conventional practice 5-6 seedlings per hill.On an average wheat and Boro rice yield were increased 1.0 t/ha and 1.33 t/ha, respectively under research management plots. Green manuring crops like Mungbean and Dhancha based cropping patterns were introduced for soil; health improvement.About 10% command areas were increased by introducing improved water distribution system. Alternate wetting and drying irrigation could save 20% water without hampering rice yields.

Objectives:

(i) To improve the yield level through crop and variety adoption; (Ii) To increase command area and water use efficiency through participatory approach; (iii) To improve soil health for sustainable crop production of resource-poor farmers; (iv) To generate and disseminate site-specific crop production technology for improving livelihoods of the farmers.

Methodology:

Integrated crop management (ICM) project activities funded by PETRRA was implemented in two northern districts (GKF site, Kurigram and RDRS site, Pirganj, Thakurgaon) during 2001-2002. Sixty resource-poor farmers (30 from each district) were actively participated in the project activities.The activities performed by the farmers were:(a) crop and variety adoption; (b) improved cultural practices; (c) soil and nutrient management; and (d) improved irrigation water distribution systems.

Achievement/Findings:

Project introduced production technologies showed better performance than traditional practices followed by the farmers.Among the newly introduced Boro varieties BRRI dhan36 performed better at RDRS site, Pirganj, on the other hand, BRRI dhan28 performed better at GKF site, Kurigram. Farmers highly convinced to adopt improved seed bed preparation, 2-3 seedlings/hill, and line sowing/spacing in their plots.Under research management wheat and Boro yield increased 1.0 t/ha and 1.33 t/ha, respectively over farmers' practices.Nutrient deficiency and low organic matter content (below 1%) were identified based on initial soil sample analysis.GM based cropping patterns were introduced for soil health improvement.Improved earthen canal system and hose pipe water distribution systems could save 32% and 92% irrigation water compared to traditional earthen canal irrigation system. About 10% command areas were increased by introducing improved water distribution system. Compared to continuous flooding irrigation alternate wetting and drying irrigation could save 20% water without hampering rice yield. Farmers' involvement in the project activities improved their livelihoods through adoption of improved crop production technologies. Women farmers were actively participated in the farming activities at RDRS site, Pirganj.
