Performance Evaluation of Modern and Traditional Ploughs in Bangladesh

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

This paper describes a newly designed bullock drawn mouldboard plough to enable farmers in the country to cultivate their land more efficiently. A comparison of performance of the new "Chashi" plough and the traditional "Deshi" plough was made in June, 1979 in fallow and tilled land of different texture and consistency. The "Chashi" plough performed better in all the tests except that in hard clay soil.

Objectives:

To enable farmers in the country to cultivate their land more efficiently.

Methodology:

The performance tests of the ploughs were undertaken in June, 1979. ln different textured soils, fallow land and land after first tillage were taken to compare the performance of both ploughs on equal land area, homogeneous soils simultaneous and ploughing. Soil texture and moisture content were determined in the laboratory. Width of cut, depth of cut, pull and time taken were measured.

Achievement/Findings:

The overall performance of the "Chashi" plough is better than that of "Deshi" plough. However, the "Deshi" plough performed better in hard clay soil. As the currently used traditional ploughs cannot break and invert the soil, the depth and width of cut are shallow and narrow. Therefore, the use of the "Chashi" plough is recommended for better performance in certain soil conditions as mentioned earlier.
