Project Brief: Testing Validation and Upscalling of Water Saving Technology in Rice Production

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The KGF funded project address the three water saving technologies in rice production. Both early and terminal drought in Aman production would be mitigated by applying 2 to 3 supplemental irrigation from farm reservoir, which could increased 10% -30%. Aman yield.Good harvest of Rabi crop would also possible by using rest water of farm reservoir at the end of Aman season.Conveyance loss of water distribution system of the deep tube well (DTW) could be reduced by 98% and irrigated area could increased by 20%-30% through introduction PVC pipe water distribution system in DTW. Check valve fitted STW needs priming once in a season to start the pump. The 'check valve' could save Tk. 3,000 in STW operation per season. Use of 'check valve' in STW could reduce hassle of repeated priming.

Objectives:

To minimize conveyance loss and increasing water use efficiency in rice production;
To harvest and ponding of rainwater for utilization in mitigating drought affected rice;
To increase irrigated area coverage by adopting water saving technologies; and
To introduce of check-valve in STW to avoid repeated priming.

Methodology:

The KGF funded project on 'testing, validation and upscaling of water saving technology in rice production' was implemented in two locations, Dhamurhat Upazila of Naogaon and Hossainpur Upazila of Kishorganj districts. Sixty participatory (30 from each site) were actively involved in the project activities and another sixty non-participatory farmers were acts as observer farmers and participated in training, field days etc. The project validate and upscale three water saving technologies in rice production addressing the problems in the project areas. The technologies are: (a) harvesting of rainwater in a farm reservoir for utilization in mitigating drought affected rice; (b) increasing irrigated area (command area) by minimizing conveyance loss through PVC pipe water distribution system; and (c) use of 'check valve' in shallow tube well (STW) for reducing hassle of repeated priming. Department of Agriculture Extension (DAE) and Barind Multipurpose Development Authority (BMDA) helped to implementing the project activities at local/field level. All the experiments/activities were done at farmers' fields. All sorts of data were collected and analyzed by using proper economic and statistical tools.

Achievement/Findings:

Farmers' awareness about farm reservoir and it use for mitigating drought in T. Aman developed. T. Aman yield could be increased (around 20%) through application of 2-3 supplemental irrigation.Farmers in the project area would familiar with new improved water distribution and crop production technologies. Finally, farmers income increased by 20%.
