Comparative Performance of Different Types of Manual Pumps

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Manually operated low lift pumps are still the main irrigation machinery used by Bangladesh farmers. Although the use of power pumps, shallow and deep tube-wells, is in' creasing, the rate is still very slow due to users' low buying capacity, fragmented plots, socioeconomic constraints, lack of spare Parts, repair and maintenance facilities, etc. For small scale irrigation projects, manually operated pumps are still the most appropriate machinery. The present study comprises the collection of different types of manually operated pumps, comparison of their Performance in terms of capacity, total lifting head, ergonomics, cost benefit ratio and maintenance characteristics. On the basis of performance, the best pump has been selected and recommendation have been made regarding its use and manufacture.

3) To measure the discharge of the pumps at different suction heads (i2.3,45,6 & 7.5 m)

4) To determine the ease in operation at different heads.

5) To study the cost involved in manufacturing and maintenance.

6) To select the best pump after evaluation of their performance and finally to recommend its use in Bangladesh.

Methodology:

The most critical part of the experiment was to regulate the pressure equivalent to different suction heads. To attain the purpose, a pressure regulator to adjust the heads was designed which eliminated the necessity of lifting the pumps from the water surface to the heights of 3,45, 6.O and 7.5 m. The regulator was constructed with a 032 m M.S. pipe provided with a system to hold weights for different suction heads and a device to fix a vacuum gauge in reading the desired suction heads with the predetermined weights. Since it was previously decided that the pumps were to be tested successively at 3.0, 45, 6.0 and 7.5 m of suction heads, the weights were designed accordingly. The weights were made from a 15,24 cm dia. M.S.bar. A vacuum gauge was used to make a thorough checking of suction heads and pressure regulator. The pressure regulator was immersed vertically into water up to its neck. To simulate the momentum in the suction pipe of a tube-well, two numbers of 3.81 cm dia. 6 m long G.I. pipe, kept on the ground in a U-shape, were fitted between the pressure regulator and the pump. Before pumping, the selected pumps were fitted to the free end of the G.I. pipe and the whole system was checked for airtight thoroughly. A drum of 50 gallons capacity was used to measure the discharge.

Achievement/Findings:

In the light of the above discussion and considering the socioeconomic condition, technical knowledge, repair-maintenance facilities, etc. the rower pump is considered as the best pump for the farmers requiring small scale irrigation facilities and operating at total heads ranging from 2 m to 6 m. On the other hand, where the total head is below 2 m the "Done" is considered to be the best water lifting device.
