Development of Wheel Pump for Low-lift Lrrigation

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

A manually operated wheel pump of 5 different sizes were developed at the Bangladesh Agricultural University for low-lift irrigation. The sizes were 8.9, 9.3, 10.8, 12.0 and 13.0 cm. The pumps were tested at different suction lifts of up to 5.48 m. The discharge capacities of the smallest and the largest sizes ranged from 21.1 to 74.7 and 44.O to 137.4 l/min, respectively, at suction lifts of 1.29 to 548 m. The capacities of the remaining sizes were in between these two ranges. The power required for operation were within the range of power that can be developed by a healthy man. The pump is simple and cheap, and can be fabricated locally. It is suitable for small and fragmented land holdings.

Objectives:

To minimize these defects and to develop a pump suitable for Bangladesh farmers.

Methodology:

Wheel pump of 5 different sizes were made: 8.9,9.3, 10.8, l2 and 13 cm. The size indicates the diameter of the cylinder used. A and B are two cylinders resting on a concrete block and are connected by means of 3.8 cm PVC pipe. An outlet is fitted in the connecting pipe. Two check valves C and D are placed at the bottom of the cylinders E and F and two plungers connected with the crank-shaft by means of connecting rods G and H. The crank-shaft provides two steps. The length of each step is I1.4 cm and thus the stroke length becomes 22.8 cm. The two ends of the shaft are introduced into two ball bearings and fitted with wooden supports. A wheel of 56 cm diameter is welded with one end of the shaft. A handle is fixed with the wheel. In fabrication, more attention was given to reducing the cost. As such the cylinders of two different materials were used for comparing the cost. The PVC cylinder was used in 8.9, 10.8 and 13 cm wheel pumps, while galvanized iron sheet were used in the others. Similar type of plunger as used in No. 6 hand pump were used in 8.9 and 9.3 cm wheel pumps. For the other pumps, a special type of plunger was used in order to reduce the cost. The plunger was made by using a piece of 16 gauge metal sheet and a piece of leather. The diameters of the sheet and leather were made almost equal to the inside diameter of the cylinder. After perforating the sheet a connected rod was welded with it and then the piece of leather was placed on the top side of the sheet. Three different types of outlet were used . The operation of the pump is simple.The clockwise or anti-clockwise rotation of the wheel causes the plungers to move inward and outward inside the cylinder. If a plunger moves inward then at the same time the other plunger moves outward and vice-versa. When a plunger moves outward it creates a vacuum in the cylinder and draws water from the sump and water above the plunger discharges through the outlet at the same time. The pump can also be operated by to-and-fro rotation of the wheel . All the wheel pumps were tested at different suction lifts. They were placed in the pump test bed with different arrangements suitable for individual pump so as to make it convenient to discharge water into a drum. The system was tested to check any leakage. Time to fill the drum and time loss between two consecutive readings were noted. All pumps were tested at L29, 2.07,2.97,3.65 and 5.48 m suction lifts.
