An experiment on fodder production in the gaps and shades of jackfruit orchard was conducted at the Farming System Research (FSR) site, Bagherpara, Jessore during 1991-92 to 1995-96. Four exotic fodder species Napier (Pennisetum purpurum), Guinea (Panicum maximum), Para (Brachiaria mutica) and German (Echinocloa grousgaIi) were studied in RCB design with three replications. Through fodder cultivation positive effect on Jackfruit production over time was exhibited by green fodder production. Napier and Guinea were found superior over two other tested species viz. Para and German. Fodder yield of Napier and Guinea were increased up to three years and after that it reduced gradually until end of the experiment i.e. forth and fifth years. Another attempt was made by fertilizer management to sustain the green fodder production of Napier and Guinea and it continued for two consecutive years (1994-95 and 1995-96). Two fertilizer doses namely 80,45, and 30 kg N, P205 and K20/ha and 120, 60, and 40 kg N, P205 and K20/ha were studied. In both the years, Napier produced significantly higher fodder yield (426 and 42.67 t/ha in 1994-95 and 1995- 96 respectively) than that of Guinea (23.9 and 32.92 t/ha in 1994-95 and 1995-96 respectively). There was no significant effect of fertilizer application on jackfruit production probably due to broadcast application on fodder crop.

i. To identify a suitable fodder species under shades of jackfruit orchard.

ii. To increase the land use efficiency by introducing green fodder species in the jackfruit orchard.

iii. To identify an effective fertilizer dose which can sustain the green forage production for a longer period.

iv. To observe the positive and/or negative effect on jackfruit production due to introduction of fodder species.

The experiment was conducted at the FSR site Bagharpara, Jessore in the Southwest region of Bangladesh. The area is located in the High Ganges River Floodplain (agro-ecological zone, AEZ 11a). Jackfruit orchard is a very common picture in the area. The soils are of calcareous in nature and the pH ranges from 7.0 to 8.5 (SRDI, 1977). The experiment was conducted during 1991-92 to 1995-96 in RCB design with three replications. Seeds/cuttings of the grasses were planted in the allies of 10-years old jackfruit orchard during the third week of July 1991. The unit plots measured 11 x 3 m. The fodder species Naiper, Guinea, Para and German were planted at 60 x 18cm, 60 x 18 cm, 18 x 12 cm and 18 x 12 cm spacing, respectively. All the species were fertilized with 6 t/ha cowdung and 175-100-50 kg N, P205, K20/ha in the form urea, TSP and MP. All of P, K and cowdung were applied as basal during the final land preparation. Nitrogen was applied in five equal splits at 45 days after planting (DAP) and after each of four harvests. Two weeding were done to keep the land free from weeds. Green forages were harvested four times a year 15 cm above the ground. Fodder yield data from individual harvest was recorded and total yield per year was calculated. Protein and total digestible nutrient yield of the harvested fodder per year were also estimated as per. Data on jackfruit yield over time were also recorded. In the second trial, Napier and Guinea in combination with two fertilizer dose 80-45-30 kg N, P205, K20/ha and 120-60-40 kg N, P205, K20/ha was studied. All P and K and one-fourth of N were applied in first top dress (after monsoon) and rest of the N was applied in equal split after each harvest of fodder. The fodder species were planted at 60 x 18 cm spacing in the third week of July 1991 in the allies of 13-year-old jackfruit orchard. Two weeding were done to keep the land weed- free. Fodder was harvested twice a year. Data on green forage yield and yield components were recorded. Data were analyzed following standard statistical procedures and treatment means were compared by DMRT.

From the results and discussion it is clear that fodder could be grown successfully under the shades of jackfruit orchard without reducing jackfruit yield. Fodder cultivation had positive effects on jackfruit yield over time. Napier and Guinea were found superior than that of Para and German in respect of green fodder production. Yield of these two species increased until three years and then decreased gradually due to decline in soil fertility and ageing of the crop. Napier species was more fertilizer responsive than that of Guinea. In the present study the higher fertilizer dose produced the highest green fodder. This indicates that there might be a scope to produce more fodder with further increase of fertilizer dose.
