Varietal Trial of Soybean

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

To investigate and evaluate the performance of 12 exotic varieties of soybean under local environmental condition, an experiment was conducted in the fields of the BCSIR with 12 soyabean varieties. The tall variety EC-39752 with maximum 100 seed weight and the highest number of branches and pods per plant gave the highest yield but took around 112 days for maturity. The dwarf variety, Lee-68 with minimum number of days to mature and maximum number of seeds/pod was found to be the second best variety in yield performance.

Objectives:

1. To undertake a comparative study of the performance of 12 introduced soybean varieties under local conditions.

2. To select the best suitable variety/varieties for large scale cultivation.

Methodology:

The experiment was conducted in the field of the Bangladesh Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (BCSIR) , Dhaka during the period from January to May 1976 with 12 exotic soybean varieties. The experiment was laid out in a RCBD with three replications. The size of each experimental plot was 3 m x 2 m. The row to row and plant to plant distances were 33.33 cm and 5.00 cm respectively. As basal dose, urea, TSP and MoP at the rate of 20 Kg N, 60 Kg P₂0₅ and 40 kg K₂0/ ha were applied. TSP and MoP were applied at the time of final land preparation while urea was applied in two installment; one at 15 days after sowing and the other, 15 days after the first application. All the intercultural operations were done in proper time. At the time of harvest, 10 plants were selected at random from each plot for taking data on growth and yield contributing characters. The collected data were statistically analysed and the mean differences were adjudged by Duncan's New Multiple Range Test.

Achievement/Findings:

The variety, Pelican, though a good yielder- was susceptible to yellow mosaic virus disease and took 100 days to mature. The other two high yielding varieties, Lee-68 and Bragg were moderately resistant to this disease and required only 89 days to reach maturity in rabi season. These short duration, high yielding and resistant varieties will provide advantage to the farmers to establish Soybean crop in 3 month's period from January to March after the harvest of Aman paddy in December and before sowing Aus paddy or jute in early April. without sacrificing any main crop. Again, the variety, EC-39752 though a good yielder cannot serve this purpose, as it takes longer duration (112 days) i. e. 23 days more than Lee-68 and Bragg to reach maturity in rabi season.
