Seed Requirment and Method of Sowing of Keora ( Sonneratia Apetala Buch.ham.) Seeds in the Nursery

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Present seeds use (11 kg for a nursery bed of 1.2 m x 1.2 m) for Keora ( Sonneratia apetala Buch.-Ham ) was found to be at least 55 times higher than the actual requirement for producing unable seedlings in the Chittagong Coastal area. No significant difference was observed in report of availability of seedling when pre-germinated and un germinated seeds were sown. Seeds sown by broadcasting showed significantly better performance than dibbling.

Objectives:

To determine the optimum seed requirement for maximum number of usable seedlings and thereby to minimize expenditure.

Methodology:

Keora fruits were collected at random from an eight year old plantation in the second week of September, 1984. These were heaped for 20 days under shed. During this period the fruits decayed. They were rubbed and washed in water to separate the seeds from the flashy rotten portion of the fruits. Site for nursery was selected by the side of a forest nursery at uttar Kattali, Chittagong. The site usually remained inundated during high tides in monsoon. The nursery site was never found under water at low tides. During dry season the nursery beds got inundated only at full monsoon and new moon.Soil of the site was clayey. Different quantities of seeds (20 gm/ 575 nos, 40 gm/1150 nos,80 gm/ 2300 nos and 120 gm / 3450 nos) per plot were sown by broadcasting in early October, 1984. The experiment was laid out in Randomized Complete Block Design (RCBD) with three replications and four treatments. Final collection of data on survival and height of seedlings was made in the first week of July, 1985 i.e., 10 months after sowing. To observe the performance of pre-germinated seeds in relation to ungerminated seeds, both germinated and ungerminated seeds, 80 gm per plot (1.2 m x 1.2 m) were sown. To test performance of seeds sown by broadcasting ( spreading the seeds over nursery by hand) and dibbling ( just pressing the seeds in to the soils), 80 gm of ungerminated seeds per plot were also used. To obtain pre-germinated seeds, the separated seeds from the fruits were kept inside perforated poly bags in moist condition for 5 days when radicle emerged out. Ungerminated seeds were with out radicle and separated from rotten fruits one day before sowing. Both the experiments were laid out in RCBD, each with two treatments(pre-germinated ungerminated; broadcasting- dibbling and three replications.Data on the availability of the seedlings were collected 15 days after sowing when seedling attained a height of 5 cm. In all the cases seeds were sown at a time when tide water did not reach the nursery bed for three days.

200 gm of seeds which is 55 times less than the present use was found adequate for a bed of 1.2 m x 1.2 m size in order to obtain maximum number of usable seedlings for Chittagong coastal area. The difference between performance of pre-germinated and ungerminated seed in respect of availability of seedlings was found to be insignificant. Dibbling showed much inferior performance in producing seedlings than broadcasting, the present practice.
