This work deals with the study of morphology and anatomy of Schmackeria lobipes with emphasis on the significance of external structures and internal organs playing prominent role in copepod taxonomy.

To study on the Morphology and Anatomy of Schmackeria Lobipes Marsh

A tow net made of bolting silk of mesh size 60 micron was used for collection of samples. The length and diameter of the net were 120 cm, and 29.5 cm, respectively. The water samples were collected with the help of a 'Nansen Reversing Water Bottle' for the determination of salinity at a desired depth. The water samples were collected simultaneously at the time of plankton sampling. Length 1.10 - 1.42 mm.; body divided into wider meta some and narrower urosome; metasome with head and a five segmented thoracic somites; first thoracic fused with head; last two thoracic somites fused together, marked off by a indistinct line; last thoracic segment rounded. Cephalic with six pairs of appendages viz, antennules, antennae, mandibles, maxillules. maxillae and maxillepeds; each thoracic somites with a pair of swimming appendages; marked constriction in between genital segment and last thoracic somte. Second: Length 0.12 mm. ; biramous; coxa with a stout outer spines; basis with two distal setae and with endopod and exopod; endopod two segmented, basal larger with two distal setae; distal one somewhat flat, apex seems to be divided, no partition marked; lateral with eight, distal with six grouped setae and five hairy structures on the inner side. Exopod four segmented, first and third smaller, second and terminal larger, first and second with two setae each, third with three lateral and distal with three terminal setae. Third: Length 0.11 mm. ; with coxa and basis, gnatho-base with nine teeths ; basis oval shaped distal end constricted with a seta, inner side with four setae; basal one long, stout and hock-like. Fourth: length 0.11 mm.; complicated lobed structure. Coxa with seven stout spines, three with hairy structures; epipodite with seven setae and a curved spine at the base. Fifth: Length 0.075 mm : unirarnous; coxa and basis with two endites, with two setae each endopod with three endites, with two setae each. Sixth: Length 0.16 mm.; uniramous; coxa broad with three lobes, first with two setae, second with three setae third with one lateral seta and a lance shaped spine. length 0.15 mrn. coxa with inner seta and small outer spine; basis with outer spine; endopod three segmented, first and second with one seta each, distal with one outer, three inner and two terminal setae. Eight and Ninth: Lenqth.second and third, 0.18 End 0.19 mm. respectively; identical; coxa with inner seta, basis with endopod and exopod. Length 0.20 mm.: coxa with inner setae; endopod three segmented, basal with inner seta, median with two inner setae; distal with three inner, two outer and two terminal setae. The alimentary canal, according to its mode of formation, can be divided into oesophagus, stomach and intestine. The short oesophagus runs vertically up wards from thn mouth and opens into the of the stomach. The stomach is a long broad tube. like structure, runs a horizontal course situated in between the antennae and the last thoracic segment. The anterior portion of the stomach is some what broader than the posterior region. There is a marked constriction at mid legion of the stomach, which is situated in front of the first thoracic segment. The heart is dorsally connected with the body by two band of muscles. It is observed that two aortae one an terrier and another posterior originate from the heart.

The above statement, it seams that S. lobipes has a relationship with P. pelagicus in their digestive system. This structural similarity may be helpful in placing both the species under the same family pseudodiaptomidae. The digestive system of S. lobipes shows a wide structural differences with that of Calanus finmarchicus under the family Calanidae. These differences help the taxonomist to place them in different families. It the ovary is compared with the ovary of Calanus finmarchicus as stated, a lot of structural differences are observed between these two species. The heart of S. lobipes is a small ovoid body lying dorsally beneath the junction 01 the first and second thoracic segments. It has a depression on its midventral region, while the C. fin merchicus as stated has a mid dorsal depression
