Comparative Performance of Some Varieties of Rape and Mustard and the Influence of Season on the Seed Yield

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The performance of the six rape seed (Brassica compestris L.) varieties viz. 'white Mustard', 'Tori 7', 'Tori 12', 'Tori 9', 'Saphala' and 'Assam Local', and six mustard varieties (Brassica juncea L.) viz. 'Rai 3', 'Rai 5', 'Rai 7', 'Rai app.", 'Varuna' and 'Laha 101' were tested for seed yield and some of its components for two successive seasons, 1975- 76 and 1976-77. The rape seed variety 'White Mustard' gave the significantly highest yield in both the years and yielded about 13.66% higher than the old standard variety 'Tori 7'. The mustard variety 'Rai 3' gave the highest yield and about 15.55% higher than the standard variety Rai 5'. These two varieties are being recommended to the cultivators. The significant variety X year interaction indicated that with the exception of 'White Mustard ' and 'Rai 3', all the remaining varieties were affected by seasons. Therefore, the climatological conditions might be considered as an important factor for rape seed and mustard cultivation. Low estimates of heritability GCV and GA indicated that yield and yield components were conditioned mostly by non-additive gene action.

Objectives:

1. To test the comparative performance of seed yield and its components of six varieties each of rape seed and mustard

2. To measure the variability present in these populations, which may be helpful in future breeding programmes.

Methodology:

The experiment was conducted in 1975-76 and 1976-77 at the experimental field of Department of Botany, Rajshahi University according to a randomized complete block design. The six varieties of rape seed selected were 'White Mustard', 'Tori 7, 'Tori 12', 'Tori 9', Saphala' and 'Assam local', and that of mustard were 'Rai 3', 'Rai 5', 'Rai 7, 'Rai app.'. 'Varuna' and 'Laha 101'. The last two varieties of both the species were improved Indian varieties and collected from Indian Agricultural Research Institute, New Delhi. The experiment had four replications and within a replication there were six blocks of 4'x4' size for each of the six varieties. For rape seed there were nine rows within a block but for mustard it was seven rows. The distance between the plants within a row was 6" and 8" for rape seed and mustard respectively. Weeding, irrigation, spraying of insecticide and other cultural practices were done as and when considered necessary throughout the growing season. Two separate experiments were conducted for rape seed and mustard. The experimental layout was same in both the years and for both the species. Data from ten randomly selected plants per variety per replication were collected for yield components viz. primary branch number, secondary branch number, siliquae/plant, seeds/siliqua, 1000 seed weight and seed yield of all the plants within a block was bulked and weighted in grams. The mean difference were tested by Duncan's Multiple Range test and variance components analysis were made for genotypic coefficient of variation (GCV), genetic advance (GA) and heritability.
