A Comparative Study of Feed Intake, Feces Outgo, Digestibility and Body Weight Gain Between Red Chittagong and Holstein FRIesian Cross Cows During Pregnancy.

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The experiment was conducted with 6 pregnant cows (3 Red Chittagong (RC) cows and 3 Holstein Friesian (HF) cross cows) at Bangladesh Agricultural University dairy farm, Mymensingh to investigate the comparative performance of RC and HF and HF cross cows during Pregnancy. Parameter studied were feed intake, feces outgo, digestibility of feed nutrients and body weight gain of RC and HF cross cows. There were a significant difference between RC and HF cross cows among all the parameters. Feed intake and feces outgo were much lower in Red Chittagong cows (4.94 kg/d & 6.16 kg/d) than HF cross cows (6.23 kg/d & 8.26 kg/d respectively). Digestibility co-efficient of nutrients were higher in RC than HF cross cows. Averages per day body weight were 237.17 g and 305.48 g in case of RC and HF cross cows. Low feed intake and high digestibility may be the profitable factors for Red Chittagong cattle rearing.

Objectives:

1. To Compare the feed intake, feces outgo, digestibility and body wt. gain of Red Chittagong and Holstein Friesian cattle.

2. To chose the better one from the two types of cattle.

Methodology:

The study was conducted at BAU dairy farm during the periods from January 2004 to April 2004. The experiment was started with 6 months pregnant cow of Red Chittagong (3 in numbers) and confined in the maternity barn up to parturition. Rice straw, green grass, wheat bran and oil cakes were supplied as feed. Four kg rice straw, 8kg green grass, I kg wheat bran and 0.25 kg oil cake were supplied per day per cow in an average and refusals are deduct from the amount. Chemical composition of feed voided by individual animal during 24 hours was weighed and recorded every day in the morning at 7.30 am and in the evening at 5.30 pm. Chemical composition of feces of individual animal were calculated to identify the co-efficient of digestibility of feed nutrients. Animal were weighed individually at the weekend.

Achievement/Findings:

From the results of this study, it is apparent that the RC cattle are distinct from other indigenous cattle of Bangladesh. Low feed intake and high digestibility may be the profitable factors for Red Chittagong cattle rearing compare to Holstein Friesian cross cows during pregnancy.
