Studies on the Physio-morpological Characteristics of Ten Pummelo Cultivars

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Physio-morphological characteristics of 8 exotic and two local cultivars of pummelo were studied. The cultivars NBSM (R). NBSM (W), Thailand (W) and Beni Hassaku showed better vegetative growth. The cultivars NBSM (W). Anseikan, NBSM (R) and Thailand (W) produced larger fruits (878.9 to 1218.g) whereas Hassaku-55 produced the smallest fruit (250.0g). The sugar content ranged from 6.13 to 8.53% and acid content from 0.56 to 1.17%. The fruit quality of Sin Amanatsu. Thailand (W) and Anseikan were found better compared to other cultivars.

Objectives:

To study the comparative merits of 8 exotic and two local cultivars of pummelo.

Methodology:

The study was undertaken at the Citrus and Vegetable Seed Research Center, Bangladesh Agricultural Research Institute, Joydebpur, Gazipur during the period from October 1984 to October 1985. The experiment was conducted in a CRD with 3 replications. The 8 exotic cultivars were Anseikan, Beni Hassaku-55, Thailand (White) Otachivana, Tosa Buntan, Mato Buntan and Sin Amanatsu and two local cultivars were white NBSM (W) and red NBSM (R). The plants were spaced 3 meters apart in a square system. The plants were about 4 years old during the period of study and was given similar cultural treatments throughout the year. Data on morphological characters such as plant height, growth , base girth, thorniness, leaf area wing area, leaf shape, shape of apex , period of flowering, time from flowering to harvest and period of harvesting were recorded. Leaf area and wing area were measured by Leaf Area Meter. Five to ten fruits were taken from each plant and fruit characters such as weight, shape, weight without rind , rind thickness, number of segment, skin and flesh colour, brix%, total acid content (%), juiciness, bitterness, number of seed and weight of 100 seeds were recorded. The brix % was determined by hand refractometer while the total acid content was recorded by an electrically operated Acid Meter. The bitterness and juiciness of pulp vesicles were determined by organoleptic test by a panel of judges.
