Genetic Analysis of Flowering Time in Tomato

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The genetics of flowering time was studied in a 6-parent diallel cross of tomato. The variance component analysis showed the importance of both additive and dominance genetic variance in the inheritance of this character. The character was observed to be controlled by two pairs of genes exhibiting dominance. The heritability in broad sense was 76.98% for this character. The graphical analysis indicated the wide genetic diversity among the parents. The regression coefficient indicated the non-allelic interaction among the genes.

Objectives:

To investigate the genetic architecture of flowering time in tomato.

Methodology:

Thirty F₁ hybrids along with their parents from a 6 x 6 diallel cross combinations were grown in a randomized block design with three replications at the experimental farm of the Institute of Postgraduate Studies in Agriculture, Salna, Gazipur in 1985-86. The parents used in this experiment were Japanese, K-7, FR-2, CT-1, Cl-143-0-10-0-3 (Cl-143) and World Champion. Each plot consisted of two rows of 2.5m long beds. The spacing was 60 x 50 cm. Standard cultural practices were followed for raising the crop. Data on flowering time were recorded in days from seeding to blooming the first flower from five randomly selected plants from each entry of each replication.
